Off-Campus Dining at Wake Forest University

B+

Good Variety Food at a Decent Cost

Winston-Salem and the surrounding area near Wake Forest has restaurants to satisfy any student, and restaurants range from casual buffet to higher class dining, with the majority of restaurants being middle-range, reasonable priced restaurants. Bonefish Grill is always great, as is Downtown Thai for sushi. The Village Tavern is popular for visitors and families alike. For those who do not like exploring new restaurants, any fast-food restaurant can be found within a short drive.

Drug Safety at Wake Forest University

C+

Not Very Apparent, but It's There

The drug scene at Wake Forest is not that active, especially among Freshman students. The main drug scene involves smoking, although drinking is much more prevalent. From my freshman hall, nobody did drugs regularly, but 80 % of the kids went out and drank every weekend when they could. However, students don't normally drink during the week, other than Wednesday nights. Enforcement has stepped up in the past 2 years from local police, but campus police is generally very lax about parties.

Scholarships at Wake Forest University

B-

Strong Financial Aid

Generally Wake does not give out that many scholarships, but I do know they have pretty strong financial aid given that it is an expensive school with a large endowment. A lot of people fill out the FAFSA forms and get a good amount of aid depending on your income level.

Off-Campus Housing at Wake Forest University

B+

Decent Selection of Houses and Apartments

The area around Wake Forest has a decent selection of houses for students, although there isn't really a neighborhood that is full of students. I know people that live in family neighborhoods and people that live in lower-rent areas, and most of them unfortunately do not have students as neighbors. It's not hard to find a house or apartment as there are three main apartment complexes within a short drive of the campus. The rent is very inexpensive compared to most college towns and you can even find a house with a big backyard and garage for very little money.

Facilities at Wake Forest University

B-

Facilities Are Showing Their Age

I am really unimpressed with the quality of the gym- Its the size of a high school gym, has very little equipment (4 treadmills for the whole school) and most of the equipment is old and tired. The gym is dark, has leaks and always smells terrible. The Reynolds Gym is showing its age and features an old, leaky indoor pool and a few decent basketball courts. The tennis courts are an embarrassment for a Division 1 school, although we have a nice track and good intramural fields. I do hear that a new gym is being planned, but will not be built anytime soon. Aesthetically, all the buildings are attractive other than a few (Scales Art Center), and the Library and Benson Student Center are updated and great places to spend time.

Computers at Wake Forest University

A-

University Provided Thinkpads Are Great!

Every student coming to Wake Forest gets a new Laptop their Freshman year and their Junior year. The laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad with a build in camera, and comes loaded with Windows 7 and all the technology you could ask for including Photoshop and Microsoft Office. They update the laptop model every two years so you generally get a newer model your Junior year. Network reliability is awesome and computers are all over the library if needed.

Transportation at Wake Forest University

B

Not Much Public Transportation, but Campus Buses Are Good

Wake Forest provides Shuttles to basketball games, football games, as well as shuttles to and from the main apartment buildings and into Winston-Salem at night. They have shuttles going around Campus at all times, although I rarely see people using them since it is a very walkable campus.
