Greek Life at LU Offers Opportunity for Community Service
Greek Life at Lawrence doesn't offer the same positives, but more importantly the negatives of larger schools. The positive elements of Greek Life at LU include but are certainly not limited to greater opportunity for organized community service. The Greek system is adjusting to new housing policies which have been evolving for the last decade, and University Admins and leaders within the fraternities and sororities are dedicated to making the Greek system a positive aspect of the community at Lawrence. You can get by just fine at Lawrence without being affiliated, but it is certainly a good thing to consider when you get started at the school.

Huge Bar Scene, Many Options for High-Quality Dining
Being familiar with the Appleton area, I've had the chance to experience a number of different restaurant options in the area even before my time at LU. Even though the bar scene is the most obvious part of the downtown district, there are plenty of great places to eat. Whether you want a greasy -spoon breakfast at the Queen Bee, or some upscale American at Black and Tan (also rather expensive), it's all within walking distance from campus. Surprising quality and variety for what is a rather small (72k residents) city.

Dining Service has Flaws but Delivers Great Quality
While my fellow Lawrence students take every opportunity to criticize Bon Appetite (the food service provider), I am here to say that the food is incredible. My favorite meal has to be Chef Alan's roasted duck, green beans, and mashed baby red potatoes. Hardly sounds like the average college meal, and to be honest it's not. Though the meal service is very expensive, there is no plate-limit, and you won't be charged for taking extra carrots or a second slice of fresh-made pizza. The food gets better every term as the kinks continue to get worked out.

Lots of Variety, Little Co-Mingling
While LU is on paper a very diverse school, the actual diversity at the day-to-day level is limited at best. International students, athletes, Conservatory Students and general academics tend to stick to their own groups. You really have to go out of your way to get out of your niche group, but if you do make the effort, you're likely to be rewarded with great perspective and a new appreciation for a different way of thinking. People are overall easy to get along with, so if you're interested in making friends outside of your "comfort zone," you will do so with little difficulty.
