Campus Dining at Tulane University

Tulane University: a Tale of Bruff, Luff, and Macmart/The LBC

Bruff is Tulane's dining hall, located right above the mail room and MacMart. There really is something for everyone here, from red beans and rice and fried chicken to pizza and the salad bar. Bruff isn't too bad (especially if you are like me and had parents that were horrible cooks), but in the event you get bored, you can head on over to Luff, which is on Loyola's campus, right next door. Luff has slightly better food quality, and not only does your Tulane meal plan work there, also, but you get to meet Loyola students. Just in case neither Luff nor Bruff are appealing, we also have McAlister Market (your Wavebucks work here, and are also part of your meal plan), where you can buy frozen dinners, Ramen, and the fixings for PB&J and the LBC, which has everything from fresh bagels to a Panda Express (your wavebucks work here, too). If none of that works for you, hey, YOU'RE IN NEW ORLEANS. Conveniently located near campus are the Camilla Grill, as well as any number of Italian, French, and Sandwich shops, and we're a short trolly ride from the French Quarter, for authentic gumbo.

Diversity at Tulane University

Tulane (Or, as It Is Affectionatly Called, Jew-Lane), the Socially Aware University

If you are Jewish, Tulane is the place for you. There is a very large, very active Jewish community, and they actually just built a new building for services, which includes a new kitchen that serve Jewish-style food.

Which isn't to say that other religions aren't welcome, or prominent; I know there are several Christian bible study groups, and a number of churches. Over all, though, no one seems to worry much about religion, in that people from all religions and backgrounds tend to mix.

There are a lot of white students, and a fair number of Asians, as well. As far as politics go, students at Tulane seem more socially involved and civic-minded (such as fighting for Bruff worker's rights, or doing community service), than political; naturally, the school draws from all over the US - and the world - so there are lots of views, but it isn't a source of tension around campus at all.

Weather at Tulane University

A+

Well, It IS New Orleans...

New Orleans is bipolar to the extreme; one day it will be 75, the next 50. And it could be either January or September. Also, even when it gets cold, it still tends to feel humid, which sort of settles in your bones. It also rains a decent amount, so bring rain boots and keep an umbrella handy. HOWEVER, there are palm trees and you can wear shorts year-round, so it is worth it.

Drug Safety at Tulane University

C-

Alcohol and Weed

Tulane is in New Orleans, so there is a lot of alcohol. I have also noticed a lot of pot use, but I would say alcohol is much more prominent. Still, it isn't all that difficult to avoid it if you wish; there are definitely opportunities to go out and socialize without having to drink.

Guys & Girls at Tulane University

If You Are Into White, Jewish Girls, Than Tulane Is a Paradise

Due to the outrageous price tag that goes along with Tulane, along with its active Jewish community, you find a lot of preppy, white, Jewish girls. Which isn't to say there aren't girls of almost every type around, they are just more of a minority.

Health & Safety at Tulane University

Safe on Campus, Rough Around Campus

On campus, I have never not felt safe. However, just outside of it, on Broadway and the surrounding streets - where there are campus buildings, such as Hillel, the Band Offices, etc - is another story. I wouldn't advise wander alone at night, as we have a lot of muggings just on the fringes of campus. However, I personally have never had any issues; use common sense and you should be ok.

Local Atmosphere at Tulane University

A+

It *Is* New Orleans

I'm from up North, so the friendliness of New Orleans was a pleasant surprise when I moved down here. There is also a ton to do, for every interest, and students (with IDs) tend to get in cheaper to most museums and zoo-related establishments. The streetcar and bus lines make getting around easy, and Tulane offers a shuttle (or you can take a cab) to and from the airport.

Tulane is right next to Loyola, so there are some events and classes the two campuses share, which is awesome because you get to meet all sorts of people.
