Nation's Capital
Living in Washington DC has many advantages, particularly if you are into government or politics. Tons of opportunities to intern and get practical experience. Lots of cultural and artistic offerings, every museum you ever wanted, and fun bars and nightlife to be found as well.

Expensive and Competitive
GW is right in downtown DC, so apartments in the nearby neighborhoods are very expensive. Luckily the metro is right on campus and if you are willing to live farther away you can still find a good deal. The University provides a list of options but Craigslist worked best for me. Landing a shared apartment or group home can be really comptetitive--there will be many other people vying for that room and you will want to start looking a month or two early.

Public Transport All the Way
Metro and buses stop right on campus and are convenient and easy to use. It is not worth the cost or hassle to have a car in Foggy Bottom. Metro often has long wait times between trains, especially at night. It also doesn't run overnight, so you have to take taxis back or use GW's shuttle service after going out.
