Coker Arboretum
Coker Arboretum
The Coker Arboretum is a quiet haven in the midst of campus where students can go to relax or study in the shade of the trees. Developed in 1903 by Dr. William Chambers Coker as an outdoor botany classroom, the Arboretum contains a wide variety of local flora. The arboretum is also a place for couples to quietly gather, and its romantic atmosphere has been the host to many weddings.
The Old Well
The Old Well
The Old Well serves as the visual symbol of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the most famous campus landmark. The Old Well was given its current decorative form in 1897 and for years served as the only water supply for the Old East and Old West dormitories. It is said that the Old Well brings luck to any student who drinks from it on the first day of classes.

The book stacks of the Walter Royal Davis Library are extensive and hold over 2.5 million volumes. As the central library for the University of North Carolina, Davis Library is the largest and most comprehensive library on campus.

Since the east wing's completion in 1797, Person Hall has served a variety of purposes. The building has been a university chapel, an art gallery, storage space, and a chemistry lab, and it currently contains office and recital space for the Department of Music. This building exemplifies some of the beautiful and classic architecture located throughout campus.

Breakfast is a favorite meal at Rams Head Dining Hall, and students enjoy the dining hall's open seating atmosphere during weekend brunch. This dining hall, located on South Campus, remains open during the weekend and serves a majority of on-campus residents.

The cornerstone of Old East was laid on October 12, 1793, and the campus celebrates "University Day" on October 12 to honor the construction of the nation's oldest state university building. Old East continues to serve the University population as a coed residence hall.

Although Granville Towers is considered a partner to UNC campus housing, Granville is managed, owned, and contracted by a private company. Granville Towers is located near campus and maintains its own facilities, including a dining hall, swimming pool, fitness center, and home theater room.

Emergency call-boxes are strategically placed throughout campus and are for use when police assistance is needed. When activated by an individual in need of assistance, the telephone system reports the individual's location to University Police, who will respond to the location even if no communication is made by the individual.

The Olde Campus Lower Quad Community is home to five residential halls: Aycock, Everett, Graham, Lewis, and Stacy. Finding a parking space on campus can be very difficult, as most on-campus lots (such as the one pictured here) are reserved for employees and commuter students. Due to this limited space, first-year students are unable to have a car except in hardship situations, and upperclassmen are usually relegated to the Park and Ride (PR) lot, which is located a few miles away from campus.

The Frank Porter Graham (FPG) Student Union building houses the Carolina Union, an organization of students and faculty that strive to provide educational, social, cultural, and entertainment programs to the University community. The Pit is the throbbing heart at the center of campus, and almost every student walks through the Pit on the way to class. Campus organizations gather here daily to advertise upcoming events, raise money for various nonprofits, or perform for entertainment.

Underage drinking and smoking are prohibited within University housing communities, but the remnants of a late-night party can be found in the bushes surrounding Craige residence hall.

The Point-to-Point Express, or the P2P Express, runs on a fixed route seven days a week from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. The P2P is a free transportation service offered to all students and employees in order to increase campus safety after dark.

"The Cubes" are located between the Pit and the student union and are a place for student organizations to advertise upcoming events and fundraisers. Students walking by the cubes can catch a glimpse of upcoming campus events that may catch their interest.

Computer and printing labs are located throughout campus to ensure that computing resources are accessible to all University students and staff. The lab pictured here is located in the Student Academic Services Building South (SASB).

Whether searching for books, clothing, or coffee, the UNC Student Stores have it all. Textbooks and school supplies are located on the third floor; themed clothing, a bookstore, and a coffee shop are on the second floor; and the first floor holds a post office, medical textbooks, and a computer repair shop.

Class sizes at UNC can range from less than 10 people to 400. Some introductory level classes are taught in larger lecture halls, such as "Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology," seen here. Although the class size may be large, visual aids can be seen from any point in the room and teaching assistants often meet with small groups of students in a separate class period called a "recitation."

An introductory English course (English 102) is a general education requirement for all UNC undergraduates. This class is usually taught by a graduate Teaching Fellow and maintains a small class size. In this environment, communication between classmates is often jovial and friendly.

Numerous organizations hold fundraisers in the Pit, such as Nourish International's "Hunger Lunch." Every Wednesday, students can buy an all-you-can-eat meal of rice, beans, and cornbread for $4, and the profits benefit sustainable development projects in developing countries around the world.
