The Charm Can Fade..
Northfield is small and quaint. There aren't a ton of options for non-Carleton sponsored recreation in town, but there are nice cafes to hang out in and get off campus a bit. Townies are generally very friendly, and seem to prefer Carls to the Oles across the river. It's a very good thing the Twin Cities aren't too far - it's quite nice to have a car and head up occasionally when Northfield seems a little too tiny.

We're Trying to Improve, and It's Working!
Carleton has gotten a lot of flack in recent years for a lack of diversity, both racial and socioeconomic. The administration took that concern very seriously and used a lot of student input to come up with some ways to address the situation. On a statistical level, we now have more racial and cultural diversity, socioeconomic diversity, and a larger number of first generation college students. We've also done a lot to improve the academic and social support for these groups. We know we're not perfect, but we're genuinely concerned with how to get better, not just in paying lip service to the principle.

Pretty Darn Great.
Carleton is a fantastic place to spend four years. Like any bureaucracy, there are flaws and inefficiencies, and some policies are arguably unjust. But Carleton is a responsive institution, and will try to address and resolve any problems you have. Academics are intense, hours in the libe are long, but generally the love of learning here is palpable. We're quirky and nerdy, and this is our place, and we love it. It's an incredible privilege to spend four years with such amazing students and professors at such an idealistic institution.
