Health & Safety at University of Mount Union

B

Better Than Some, Worse Than Others

I think that I would feel safer with a police force and not just Campus Security. They are responsive to a point, but it sometimes takes a long time.

Transportation at University of Mount Union

C-

Not Good

There are no good transportation options. Even if you have your own car, parking is on campus. We are landlocked and have no space to expand. If you don't have a car, then there is no way of getting around besides walking. Unless you are an international student looking to get transportation to an airport for the holidays, there are no long-distance transportation options besides a train that leaves at 3 a.m. Very poor overall. No good public transportation.

Scholarships at University of Mount Union

A

Very Good

It doesn't apply to me since I don't get any aid according to FAFSA (besides a minimal loan I always reject). The Office of Financial Aid is very helpful though. I wish I got more money from my school as the tuition is now over $30,000 and it's ridiculous for the quality of education I receive.

Local Atmosphere at University of Mount Union

D

Not Good at All

Alliance is a horrible town in terms of local atmosphere. While there are a few local treasures, finding them and the safety in getting there, in my opinion, isn't worth it. It's a dying town in the Rust Belt, and each year, more and more shops close.

Guys & Girls at University of Mount Union

C

Football and Drama

I think that since a lot of the people are locals, mostly from Ohio and many from similar high schools, the atmosphere and maturity level of these students is quite low. It feels like high school, and in some regards worse. The petty arguments, the stupid drunken parties, and drama isn't worth it in my opinion. I am from out-of-state and can only see such drama between guys and girls. Both are immature, as a whole. The boys tend to be into athletics, which is understandable since we come from a pretty big football school (don't get me started on this college's athletic program), but they tend to bully their way around. On another note, I avoid certain residence halls because I don't feel comfortable walking past. I've been made fun of several times for being Asian, which I do not appreciate, but will not confront on my own. I am about to graduate next year and don't see how many of these students come to an expensive liberal arts college only to party. They blatantly don't care about their education, and it's a sad reflection on society.

Overall Experience at University of Mount Union

C

Average

I first came to Mount Union because I wanted to get away and experience life outside of NY. Being out of state I wanted to go to a small school, and I also came from a similarly small high school. However, after just two years (and one might argue 1.5 due to study abroad), I have outgrown this school. I've made one lasting friendship that will persist after college. I find that the drama is not worth it. I want a more professional atmosphere where education is more highly prioritized. I now wish I had gone to a large school. I know I cannot do it over, so I am looking to go to a large school for my graduate studies. I also wish that the quality of my education was related to the cost I paid to go here. I think that many of the professors excel at their work and really have a passion. But having so many general education requirements causes undo stress on the professors. They do not have the passion in these classes as they do their specialty, which causes students to become disinterested in these classes.

I do want to commend my academic advisor. She is a wonderful guide for me and as I've put more effort into getting to know her, I feel that she has helped me more than any other person. She goes beyond signing off on my courses and making sure I'll graduate, but that I'm doing well and getting the most out of college.

I would not come here again though, if I had the choice. I would have gone to SUNY at Buffalo, my dream school Columbia (as if I would have been accepted, but one can still dream), or a local GA university (my family moved there recently). I understand that this exploring behavior is normal and accepted for college aged students, but I wish that their education was more valued. They are here to make a better future and it's important that they gain from college everything that they can, not only socially, but academically and professionally.

Academics at University of Mount Union

B

Pretty Good.

Registration is alright. I prefer the good old paper and pen registration since the online version sometimes freezes when too many people are using the server. I also don't like the amount of money you have to spend to overload. Unless you're an honors student, 19 is the limit.

I enjoy my courses for the most part, my major and minor courses especially. I do not like general education requirements. They are taught by professors who would rather teach students who want to be there. I understand it's a liberal arts institution, but it needs to be revised.

I enjoy the library, but I wish it was open later. The 24-hour area is nice when people are studying, but if they are just there to talk, as is often the case, I can't get any work done. I wish we had a union. Or some place for students to hang out so the library didn't become that place. Overall, I think we have a good academic program, but I wish it was better, stronger, and more focused.

Campus Dining at University of Mount Union

C-

Don't Get Me Started.

AVI is not the best provider for a college campus. It's controlling. For instance, you can't have any outside food in the campus center that is not provided by AVI. So any organization must go through them if they want food for their meetings or events. Also, being a vegetarian makes life so much harder. I had to fight for my right to have vegetarian options, and it's still not equal. For instance, they say that there is a vegetarian option available at every station (pasta, home-style, grill, salad/wrap, international) but at the home-style, which is often roast beef, chicken, turkey, etc., the vegetarian option is steamed vegetables. That is not an adequate form of protein and is not acceptable in my book.

They service is good though, I can't blame AVI for the poor floor plan of the cafeteria or its size. The workers are all friendly and helpful (except for one, but he's getting better). I wish there were more places to eat on campus. My sister goes to a school smaller than mine and has more on-campus options. I do enjoy the B&B Cafe, they have a better menu but it's a little expensive. I am living in an apartment next year to avoid the cafeteria.

Greek Life at University of Mount Union

C+

Alright...

Greek life is definitely present on campus. They do a lot of good in their philanthropy; however, the boys have quite a reputation. I'm not a fan of a lot of the fraternities just because of their attitude and the way that they present themselves. I wish they had a bit more integrity as students and young men and not as partiers. But that is life.

I am a big advocate for Alpha Phi Omega, the coed service fraternity. I am now a brother and it is one of the best choices I have made in college so far. They create a great base of friends and support as well as teaching college students about balancing academic, social, and service lifestyles.

Diversity at University of Mount Union

C

I Agree With the Sample

The natural diversity at Mount Union is almost nonexistent. If there wasn't a good football team or a great international student population (relative to our size), I would feel alone. I am an adopted Korean student and have grown up in an all-white community. I think that it's a good section racially/ethnically because they try. Economically it's all pretty much the same. I think this is due to the fact that this is a private institution. However, athletics and other scholarships allow for some variation. Sexual orientation-wise, I think that there is not a strong tolerance for this freedom. There is a GSA on campus and they have a strong following, but otherwise I think there might be some homophobic people on campus. Politically, I have felt pressure to lie about my affiliation because of the strong backlash and opinions people have.

Weather at University of Mount Union

C

We're Like the Postal Service.

Through hail/sleet/snow/rain we go to class. I've never heard of a day of classes being canceled due to inclement weather. I don't even remember a day starting late because of snow. Yet we have the worst snow next to where I used to live (western NY). While other universities around us are canceled for the day, we blaze forward and trudge to class in 3 feet of snow and 10 degree below zero (or more!). The snow removal of the sidewalks is okay if you live close to essential buildings. Otherwise they may clear it after you've had your first few classes. That means if you have a 7:45 or 8 a.m. class, you will have to brave the elements on your own.

Inside Scoop at University of Mount Union

C

Football.

We're often the D-III football champions or close to it. That's about it. We have a good solid academic program and social scene. I wouldn't go here again though. Now, after studying abroad and moving to a larger city, I'd much rather go to a larger school that could offer me much more professional and social growth. I liked Mount Union for my first year, but after that, I feel like I've outgrown it. Their policies are childish and excessive. They have an excellent administrative staff though, and I would love to keep that; however, overall, I just feel like I could have gotten more out of my college experience at a larger, more urban school.

Athletics at University of Mount Union

Football.

That's all we care about. Or at least that's all they make it seem like they care about. I wish I participated in sports (Track/XC), but I didn't. Our new facilities are amazing though and I like them.

Drug Safety at University of Mount Union

B

Definitely Present.

You can easily avoid it, or find it, if that's what you want. A lot more people know more about it, since they're the ones who try and find it. Pot is big.

Facilities at Kent State University

A-

Cunningham

I like the facilities in Cunningham with BSCI and BMS. The professors are willing to help graduate students with their research by allowing them to use their facilities and offer help when they can. As a first year graduate student I've found them to be very helpful, but I wish the building itself was renovated. There are no lounges save for a few chairs at the end of hallways and TA offices are crammed 12 to a room with 6 desks. A renovated and updated building would be greatly appreciated.
