Basketball Is the Heart and Soul of SJU

Basketball season is the best time of the year! There is so much school spirit at these games and you'll hear "The Hawk Will Never Die!" ringing in your eyes for days after a game.

Sororities Follow the Stereotype for the Most Part While Frats Tend to Be More Diverse

There are 4 sororities and 4 frats at SJU. The frats usually have the best parties to go on weekends if you don't want to pay for a cab to Manayunk but some frats you need to watch out for. The sororities don't seem to do anything except sit together at lunch with their matching T-Shirts.

Parking Is Nonexistant for Freshmen and Only Partially Available to Upperclassmen

If you live in the Townhouses or Merion Gardens, you'll have a parking spot. People who live in Borgia and Rashford usually get a spot but it's a lottery system. Don't plan on parking on campus since they are pretty strict with who they give permits too and parking on the street is hit or miss. The shuttles are really the way to go and with all the public transportation available a car is really not necessary

Local Atmosphere at Saint Joseph's University

Lower Merion Makes Life Difficult

There is a neighborhood full of people who think they are above everyone else simply due to the fact they have a lot of money. They use this money to bring ridiculous lawsuits against other people and recently SJU has been the target. Neighborhood relations were fine until they began refusing to allow SJU to have sports fields on SJU's OWN property. It's been a bit tense ever since the hearings started.

People Completely Disregard College of Arts and Sciences

If you are in the College of Arts and Sciences be prepared to be looked down upon. People recognize SJU for their business school and often forget there is also a college of Arts and Sciences. While the business school is very impressive the arts and sciences deserve a more credit. The hardest majors are probably biology and accounting so if you are planning on majoring in either of those... prepare yourself.

Gers Are a Bit Absurd at Times

SJU requires a lot of General Education requirements in order to graduate. While SJU is a liberal arts school and one expects to have to take classes that have nothing to do with their major... the fact that 3 theologies and 3 philosophies are required are a bit absurd. Luckily the curriculum is changing now that they realized people taking GERs until senior year is ridiculous

Health & Safety at Saint Joseph's University

It's a City School So You Have to Be Smart

SJU is located on the edge of Philadelphia and for the most part it's a very safe neighborhood. Half the school is in Lower Merion which is an upper middle class neighborhood with plenty of security but the city side is where you will find yourself most of the time... especially at night. The escort system is good for the most part but if you are anywhere near a shuttle stop they will not pick you up no matter how uncomfortable you are in a situation or no matter how long it will be until the next shuttle.

The Library Is a Good Place to Study During the Semester... Awful During Finals Week

The Library is centrally located on campus which makes it convenient and there are usually more than enough places to study. It would definitely benefit students to have more group study rooms available but for the most part the facilities are sufficient. During Finals week the library turns into a social hangout where no one is actually studying and people somehow think just being in the library will help them pass their exams.
