Great Professors
I've really liked all of the professors I've had while at Iowa State University. They encourage students to come to office hours and make themselves available outside of those hours if a student needs them. It seems like my professors have all trusted me, and have even loaned me their personal books and resources for supplemental education. I only wish the academic programs were funded as well as the football program.

Great Apartments in Ames
There is a ton of choice in Ames for off-campus housing. There are a few landlords to avoid, but overall they're decent. There are apartments everywhere, so it's not hard to find one, and some of them are fairly cheap. The bus goes to most every place where there's apartments, so you don't need to worry about trying to find a place to park on campus. Most buildings have plenty of parking spaces, unless you're renting in campustown, then it might be more of a problem.

Rampant Alcohol Use
While I haven't seen too much abuse of illegal drugs (except for smoking pot, but who really cares about that?), alcohol is pervasive here. If you live in/near campustown, be prepared for your place to get trashed every weekend by drunk kids. As soon as the weather gets nice, all the houses around campus have students outside playing games and drinking beer.
