Local Atmosphere at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

B+

There's Something Outside of Lab?

MIT could do a lot better to give back to its community. Central Square, just down the street, is a poor and undeveloped area, but it could be thriving like Harvard square is. Harvard square is nearby, and it's cute, and Boston has a lot of nice places to go, but it would be nice to be located in one.

Kendal is growing, though, and there are some restaurants tucked in there. So is the Mass ave area between central and MIT, several places have opened while I've been here.

Boston in general is pretty great, if you ever manage to get yourself off campus. Unfortunately, being at MIT leaves you with little time to do that. On campus, though, food choices are highly limited.

Nightlife at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Pretty Good, If You Get Off Campus

There are frequent parties at the frats for if you're underage and there are plenty of clubs for if you're of age. They close relatively early in Boston, though. Just walking home from campus down Mass Ave, (a few blocks away), the streets are full of people going to clubs late at night. Makes it feel safer to be walking home at night because the streets are so full of people.

Transportation at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

A-

Small

You don't really need transportation to get around campus, it's pretty small. There is a shuttle that goes to the far reaches, but I never take it because it's really not that far.

There are night shuttles around the city. It's cool, they come pretty frequently and you can call a number for ETA or to find out where the stop is, but the number isn't reliable and I've had trouble finding my way back to the stop.

Luckily, public transportation in Boston is pretty good, except that it stops running late at night. But you can get nearly anywhere with public transit. MIT offers passes, but you have to buy a month's pass a month in advance, which is super inconvenient. You often don't know you need it until it's too late.
