Environmental Studies

We have one of the best ES programs in the world, but once I discovered that I was more interested in Environmental Sociology, I realized how little our program had that type of focus. There is a strong focus on "sustainability," agriculture, and the biological side of the environment, which is also great for those who are interested in it. However, for me, it didn't have enough of the variety I was looking for. Still, I took a number of amazing and life changes courses in the major and I definitely see how it really is the "next hot career path" because of all of it's practical usage in a future that is so green-oriented. It really is a great program and has some amazing geography to study right at your feet!

The lower-division major is terrible. You literally are stuck taking a number of courses that you think have nothing to do with your major (Calc, Stats, Econ, Phil, Bio) and then you realize how interdisciplinary the field really is. That's what surprised me the most, but it was also great to take more focused classes during upper-division.

Easy to Meet New People

People aren't looking for relationships. They dress like hipsters or beach crowds and then you see some athletes every so often.

Social life is great. There's something for everyone. Same goes for any interest you have. If there isn't a club/org for whatever you're into, you can make one yourself along with some new friends.

Transportation at University of California - Santa Barbara

Car is Convenient but not Necessary

Public Metro Transit is free for fee-paying students and it takes you anywhere you want to go basically. There is also Bill's Bus for 21+ events off campus and outside of IV and you can call in cabs/party buses whenever you want to. A car is convenient, but not 100% necessary.
