While the Sports section occupies the most space in the University's newspaper, The Chronicle, I feel that I know very little about sports or know many fellow students who actually care. Pride's football team was cancelled last year and although students threw a fit for a few weeks, I can't really understand why. I actually went to homecoming, and there was maybe 100-300 people passing through, at a school of 12,000, not including faculty. I'm unaware of sports-related clubs (who knew we had a rowing team?) and I've been in the dark about playing sports just for leisure. Even though i work on the newspaper, I see how Hofstra ranks in relation to other schools in our sector, but I still have no idea. This just in, our newest basketball coach (the old one left for Fordham), was caught last week passed-out-drunk, at a stop light with his foot on the brake near school.

Train Station Support
One of the major draws of Hofstra University is the proximity to New York City, which is a mere 30 miles away. However, getting there by the bus' schedule takes two hours just to walk out of Penn Station. The pick up and drop-off times are completely unreliable, although I've been willing to always make the sacrifice just to get out of Hempstead. There have been COUNTLESS times that I have arrived at Mineola Station approximately quarter of the hour, I call Public Safety to see if the bus has already left and I hear: The bus only comes 30 minutes after every hour, you have to wait 45 minutes (even though the security/seating station is closed). I have taken the audacity to ask: "Would Public Safety be willing to come pick a few of Hofstra's students here waiting, I'm sorry, our train just arrived." And I have literally heard, "Sorry. They are busy with other transportation," i.e. picking up under-age drunk students who behave reckless on campus and at the bars surrounding campus.
This is been the most frustrating part, especially at night, wondering whether I'm going to ever get a ride home.

Appropriate
Although it's cold and snowy here sometimes, I don't mind so much since I live right on campus and don't have access to a car. I thought Hofstra was thoughtful when they decided to cancel school, and it the decision was always appropriate. Even on sunny days, some professors (if possible) will take outside in the courtyard!
