Almost Overly Safe
There is a University police force on campus that is pretty much always around. It's good and bad because they respond quickly to emergencies but people are constantly getting busted for drugs/alcohol/etc. so just keep that in mind.

Safe Enough
There aren't many cases of people overdosing or anything because the rules are strict, especially in dorms but in off-campus student housing also because there is security that patrols the floors. Its harder to get busted with alcohol in the off-campus housing than the dorms obvious because the dorms have RAs that knock if people are getting too loud or if they hear bottles 'clinking'. It's possible to sneak alcohol or pills into dorms but smoking weed its a TOTAL no unless... you're eating a brownie.

Printing on Campus Is the Worst...
if you don't have your own printer, obviously. The ones in the libraries are kind of confusing to use and you have to pay per page which sucks. Campus wireless is pretty good if you're on a computer but it drops constantly on mobile devices unless you're sitting in one place. You need a personal computer on campus or you'll be living in the library to get assignments and do homework.

Depends..
On your major and if you play a sport. The bad part about going to a huge school is that money is tight a lot of the time so you have to be pretty extraordinary to get a lot of money.

Pretty Amazing Compared to Most Places
Chipotle, Dominos, Cold Stone, Applebee's, Starbucks (found everywhere in College Park), Chinese food, wing joints, Burger King, 24-hour McDonalds, Subway... the list goes on. A lot of places deliver to the campus and you can even order food online from pizza and Chinese restaurants which is super convenient but sometimes it takes around an hour so expect to wait.

Gets Tired After a While
At first everything is amazing because its already made and all you have to do is swipe to eat. It seems unlimited but you'll learn by the end of the semester that it really isn't. The food is decent but after a while you get really tired of the same food and by the end of the semester (if you have any points left), you'll find yourself not even wanting to eat the food from the dining hall but there aren't many other options.

OMG
It is so bipolar. It will be cold and rainy in the morning so you put on a hoodie and rainboots but when you leave class in the afternoon its sunny and warm, which means it gets so humid... but that's only during the early fall. But even after that the temperatures vary wildly by day. It would be 35 one day and then 65 the next but you get used to it and it becomes bareable.

None.
There's no such thing as a College Park "local" because College Park is what the name describes. 99% of the people in CP are students, even off campus. Besides that it's people that work there. The school is the culture so if you do leave campus during the day you'll pretty much only see UMD shuttles and people driving through College Park.

Lovely
Very lovely actually. The shuttles are "free" for students (aka you paid for it in your tuition already) & many of them run all day. The only ones that don't are the ones that stop near residence halls. I know right? But there is a shuttle to the Metro station which runs all day, everyday which is great. I was surprised to learn how cheap the Metro is because I live in NY and transportation costs A LOT. The Metro is amazing it goes to all the hot spots in the DMV.
If you have a car, it probably comes in handy at the most amazing times but 9 times out of 10, it's not really necessary.

I Love It.
UMD is unique because, as cliche as it sounds, there is no one type of student here. There are so many activities and people from all different walks of life that you never really have an excuse to be bored or not branch out. It was my top choice and everyday I wake up and love my school, which is an amazing feeling. Its VERY rare to hear anyone who doesn't like the school. If they don't, it's usually because they aren't being true to themselves or they just hate the state of Maryland.

Very Present, but Not Overbearing.
Its very common to see people rocking their letters around campus. It seems like at least a quarter of the student body are involved or at least consider it. There are a lot of frats and sororities that do so many different things you would really have to do your research. Greeks definitely fit in with everyone else on campus.
Housing is available on Frat Row for some but definitely not all frats/sororities. A lot of parties take place there but are usually shut down by PG Police.

Quite Strict but You Could Get Lucky
Police presence definitely hinders most illicit activities but some dorms are convenient for smoking or drinking, usually the ones on South Campus. A lot of people get busted on the weekends but punishments aren't very severe.

Over 100+ Majors
There are SO many majors at UMD that there is seriously something for everyone. Even the most random and extraordinary majors, they have it. Like seriously, just go look for yourself. You'll be amazed.

Nice
The campus is gorgeous. Green all year round because millions are spent on landscape. The Rec Center is beautiful and has like 500+ machines and weight thingys. As you can see, athletes to the most unathletic people like me can maneuver through and get a great workout.
There lots of libraries on campus with an endless amount of sources. They're all relatively quiet. However, if you have intense studying to do, steer clear of the 2nd floor of McKeldin and make the trip to the Performing Arts Library instead. It's dead quiet.
