Off-Campus Housing at Southwestern University

A

Cheap and Accessible

I am a sophomore and will be living off-campus next year and I found a house less than a block from the University that is very cheap. Because the University is so old, there are a number of homes within a two block area that are traditionally rented by university students and are very cheap and decent living arrangements.

Drug Safety at Southwestern University

B+

Present but Not Overbearing

The drug scene is a real one at SU. Located only thirty minutes from Austin, TX, easily one of the most liberal cities in the country, there is plenty of access to many types of drugs. In general, however, the average SU student only smokes marijuana, and the ones who do more than that will only do Ecstasy, LSD, and Shrooms. No traditional hard drugs (cocaine, meth, heroin, etc) ever seem to surface because most SU students are looking for a mind-bending experience, not a life-bending one.

Inside Scoop at Southwestern University

A+

Unique

Southwestern University is certainly unique among both comparable and non-comparable colleges. The reason for this lies in its students, faculty, and history. SU students find nothing greater than complaining about the University, but even this is unique because they complain because they know someone is going to listen if they do. SU, thanks to its size and nature, has built a community of itself and it is one that prides itself on acceptance and rigorous education. If you attend here, you will leave both fully prepared for your field and for life in general. As a guy raised in the city, coming to an a female-dominant school that is half the size of my high school in a town with less than a quarter of my previous town's population, I was hesitant. But it only took about a semester for me to realize that SU has so much more to offer, if only someone is willing to search it out.

Athletics at Southwestern University

A

There but Kind of Dead

We have lots of very talented students on our sports team, but it often seems that many SU students don't recognize this or even care. SU is already pretty unified thanks to the size of our school, but even though I am not an athlete, I feel like our school athletes deserve way more credit and praise, especially given their success athletically along with their success academically.

Greek Life at Southwestern University

B+

Strong, but Not Necessary

Greek life is definitely a force on campus, especially in the social arena. Since many of our fraternities are among the oldest in the state and nation, they have a lot of history and therefore support from alumni and the administration. However, it is foolish to think that you must be Greek to enjoy greek social life. While it is true that some fraternities are way less accepting of strangers or people not always around the fraternity, the best fraternities on campus usually try to embrace the entire campus instead of being sectarian.

Transportation at Southwestern University

C+

Bad Transportation Infrastructure, but Not Necessary Anyways

I came from a city that had a very well-developed mass transportation system and it allowed pretty seamless integration of the nearby cities and made getting around very easy. Sadly, Georgetown and SU are not equipped with mass transportation of any kinds (not even cabbies or buses), but since SU pretty much has everything on campus, it is usually not necessary to have those kinds of things anyways. However, if you are an out-of-state or an an international student and you have no car, make sure to make friends with someone who does because you never know when you might have to go to Austin or Round Rock for something
