There Are Lots of Options
Just down the street there is a shopping center with some great places to eat such as Urbane Cafe and Sushi Freak. The price is reasonable at both and it is very convenient as it is walking distance from the campus. Also, over in Clairemont, there are some great hole-in-the-wall places, like Sushi Diner, or anywhere in Korea Town, for good prices, however one would most certainly need a car to get there. Downtown has some excellent places to eat, albeit a bit more expensive than elsewhere.

People Like Their Alcohol
I am not too familiar with the drug scene on campus, however I do believe there are students who do them. Smoking can be seen in various locations around campus and usually it is seen from students in the Art department or the foreigners. Alcohol is way more popular as underage students will hide some in their dorms and those of age will often go out to the bars on weekends. Peer pressure only seems to be a problem within the Greek community. Often, if you go to a party and don't feel like drinking, someone may come up to you and offer you a drink, but won't keep pestering you to have one if you say no.

Location! Location! Location! Oh, and Study Abroad...
One of the most unique things about USD is it's location. It is perched up on a hill overlooking the city. It has spectacular views and a beautiful campus. It is centrally located in San Diego with the beach, downtown, coronado, and la jolla not too far away. Also, the study abroad program ranks #1 in the nation for participation. It offers great programs to create lasting memories and wonderful experiences. That in itself explains why so many people participate, making it... what? Oh yeah, #1.
