Art Major...For the TRUE Artist

Im a drawing major hopeful at UF.So at UF if you are interested in ceramics or graphic design I would recommend the school. The teachers are well informed and you will learn a lot, specifically in ceramics. In fact this is true for all art majors. Although most intro courses are taught by graduate students not actual professors. If you are coming here for painting or drawing be prepared to deal with broken easels no proper tables or chairs and a lot of out of pocket expenses because your class fees don't cover anything. Oh and be ready to clean because the building has one janitor. I can't speak for graphic design, but I know they accept a limited number of students to the program and most don't get in....so find something to do for a year and umm reapply? Most classes are 3 hours, and longer in upper level courses. The work load depends on the specific class but is doable. The 3 hour classes are not bad considering work time. Students are nice and laid back and so are most faculty. The problem with this program is you end up taking classes in art that are not specifically related to your major so by spring of your fourth semester when you are applying to your specific major (drawing, photo, etc.) you may not know if you want to be in the program. Also after two years of putting up with nonsense there is still a chance you may not get into your desired major...and then you get into your second choice. For most people pursuing art as a profession this can be frustrating. So if your "free spirit" wants to be in a program cross your fingers (graphic design students) and hope you get in. Otherwise most people get into their majors and its all good. Overall the program is decent but not spectacular.

Diversity at University of Florida

A+

Lots of People

The University of Florida had so many students it would be weird if the student population wasn't diverse. Typically There are alot of white students, but there are also many asians, african americans, indians, hispanics, etc. There are also a lot of foreign students I hear different languages every day. I would say people are very accepting and friendly regardless of race, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation. Religion is also diverse but mainly Christian. Basically there is a club/greek house for everything you can imagine so even quiet people like myself can make friends. Just remember rich caucasians near sorority row, artsy kids near the arts buildings, jocks near the stadium etc.

Athletics at University of Florida

A+

I Don't Do Sports

I don't like sports but if you do this school has everything. Great games to watch, clubs, teams etc. And no matter your level you can find a team to play on or support. Considering how much money they spend on football compared to the art program....we must have the best team on EARTH.
