Off-Campus Housing at Middlebury College

Why Go Off Campus?

I don't know many people who choose to live off campus. Middlebury has a very cohesive community with a beautiful campus. All the entertainment happens on campus, and as there's not really an active town outside most people stay in dorms. The senior year housing options (and all the on campus housing really) is great, so most people live on campus. For people who want more of a house there are specialty "dorms" that really are houses. We have language houses, out-door oriented houses, and about a dozen others, and even the option of creating something new if enough people are interested. There are also suites available most years, particularly for seniors, so you can live with your friends in an apartment-like setting. So, why go off campus?

Greek Life at Middlebury College

A

Greek-Less

We don't have a greek life at Middlebury. There are "social houses", which is basically our greek life, only its co-ed. To me, not having Greek life is one of the best things about Midd. There are still greek-like parties, and even a period where people "rush" to get into the houses, but the dynamic is different and less exclusive than I would imagine a normal greek system to be. If you're looking for thousands of new people at every party, tons of social events, and exclusiveness, then Middlebury probably isn't your scene. There are still tons of parties to go to and lots of things to do, just not with the same dynamic.

What It's Like in VT

We pretty much live in farmland. There's no roaring city nearby, which some people might see as a flaw, but that just means that everyone stays on campus every weekend, which is nice. It also means we have to create our own things to do. Midd kids are some of the most creative and fun loving people I've ever met. For example, Quidditch, the Harry Potter game played on brooms, was started at Midd. And we did it right. The "Quidditch World Cup" draws in literally hundreds of people, parents, faculty, and community members included. We have jugglers, unicyclers, an owlry with live owls, different stalls and booths with excellent Vermont food and sweets, choir performances, and the like. The whole thing is incredible and a lot of fun. We also have some great themed parties. One of the best was Viva Ross Vegas, held in Ross dorm, where everyone got dressed up in classy clothes, gambled for big prizes, ate delicious food, and danced to the live jazz band. There room was filled and the evening was a huge success. Sure there are the normal parties with booze and popular music, but there's also a million things that make living in such a rural place so special.
