Small Town Charm, but Limited Options.
Valparaiso is a typical city in Indiana. Though it is relatively close to Chicago, it is not close enough that there are a lot of close activities to do on a college student's budget. There are plenty of restaurants, some places to shop, a movie theater, and mini-golf, but for something really fun you do need to go to Chicago. Outdoor activities are limited. Aside from the dunes, there aren't really any trails to go hiking or lakes to swim in. However, residents of Valparaiso are generally proud of the university and very friendly to students. The most exciting thing in Valparaiso is the Orville Redenbacher Popcorn Festival in the fall.

Christ College Is the Distinguishing Feature
VU's academics vary wildly depending on your major. Engineering and nursing are particularly strong, but the education department is a mess. As an English major who came in with a significant number of AP credits, I was able to bypass most of the gen-ed requirements and start right in with my major. The English department is okay; there are certain professors who are brilliant and want to do everything to ensure their students succeed, but then there are others who seem to be there only to forward their own agenda. Christ College is excellent. I have been impressed with all the staff and professors involved in that program.

What Diversity?
Valparaiso is extremely homogeneous. Most of the population is upper-class, white, straight, and leaning more toward the conservative side politically. We do have some international students, but they tend to socialize among themselves. There could definitely be a lot more diversity here, but I do not see the composition of the school changing anytime soon.
