The Barnard-Columbia Experience

Barnard College is the sister school of Columbia University, located in Manhattan New York. It has a small campus compared to Columbia but it has a home feeling. The athletic center and the library is faily small. Every Barnard and Columbia student is allowed access to both campuses and their fascilities. Usually when i dont want to surround myself with a generous amount of people when I want to study or work out in the gym, I stay on my campus rather than go to Columbia Unveristy across the street. Generally, there is no campus life because New York is our main source of entertainment and culture. However, we do have greek life, cultural support groups, theater groups, accapella music groups. What is most exciting is when the campus hosts small flee markets during the day. Students are allowed to shop for nice vintage accessories in between classes. My favorite building on campus is the Diana Center. It just opened Spring 2010 and it is filled with state of the art computer labs and a new dinning hall. It is also a place to host events for formal ceremonies or open mics for the musicians and poets on campus and in the city.

Off-Campus Dining at Barnard College

A

New York Eating

I assume my school does not stress for execellent on campus dining because New York is filled with fabulous resturants and diners for every craving and type of food you can imagine. All the resturants are conviently accessible by the subway. However, it is important to research affordable dining because some of the resturants can be a bit pricy on a college student's budget. However the streets are always littered with food stands selling hot meals and even fresh fruit. Any type of food you can think of, you can find in New York. As far as student discounts, I have yet to find any resturants that gave me a discount.

Overall Experience at Barnard College

B+

Personal Growth

My experience at Barnard was very interesting. I graduated from a very rigorous high school so the academic experience was not as tramatic for me as other college students. I only struggled in my music classes because I had not had any prior knowledge in music theory or piano. Socially, i was challenged the most. For the first time, I was on my own in a new and very large city. Most of my friends went to the southern colleges and with each other. Essentially i was alone but I was excited about meeting new people. At the begining, I was extremely bubbly and warm to everyone I encountered. However, many people took my niceness as fake or weak. I encountered several people who I thought I could trust and they turned out to be very untrustworthy and real horrible people. They made my life extremely and unneccesarily dramatic and uncomfortable. I even found myself wishing I was back home. However, I involved myself in a student group on campus called BOSS: Barnard Organization for Soul Sisters. Within this group, I met the most genuine and caring people. With their help and their wisdom I ended my first year happy and successfully. I am so happy to have met them. As I look back on my Freshman year of college. I realize how much I have grown into a more mature young lady. My struggles strengthened me and hardened my skin. I am very greatful for everything that happened that year. It has made me more of the person I am today than all four of my years in high school. I still can't believe the change sometimes. But everyday I am reminded when my peers and my elders tell me how much I have grown and how proud they are of me.
