Diversity at Smith College

C

Liberal Privilege and Wealth

Smith College is supposedly a politically aware campus. Though there are many people who are able to freely express their opinions and morals and beliefs, liberals, atheists, and homosexual sexual orientation are often in the majority. Smith also costs a lot a of money, with very little aid and scholarships available. Therefore, the more wealthy, or those who have access to money, are more advantaged to afford an education. It is proven that undergrad education is associated with wealth- better education is achieved with higher amounts of wealth, and that is often correlated with residential living and race. Though Smith educates its students about the importance of diversity and injustices, students of Smith are the result of lack of diversity. Any diversion from the populous, however, do receive acceptance from peers, thanks to the institutions focus on diversity.

Transportation at Smith College

B+

Big City Options in a Small Town

Students have a lot of options in Northampton for travel. The local PVTA bus runs around Northampton, to and from all surrounding colleges and cities. Certain routes (like to colleges) are free for college students. Granted, any public transportation has its downfalls, such as unnecessary stops and scheduled route times. A short 5 minute walk brings on to the Peter Pan Station. Amtrak is accessible after a free PVTA ride to Amherst or Peter Pan/PVTA bus ride to Springfield. The only challenge is the airport- Bradley in Hartford being the closest- 40 min, only accessible by car. ZipCars are available by the hour, pre-sign-up required and hourly cost. Taxis are also available by phone.
