Local Atmosphere at Washington & Lee University

B+

Definitely a "Small Town" Atmosphere

Lexington is a 7,000 person town. It has the necessary amenities like Wal Mart, CVS and Kroger, with a sprinkling of good restaurants as well as chains. There are also a couple cute clothing boutiques. It's hard to get to Wal Mart in particular without a car but as a freshman you can take the shuttle on Saturdays. Definitely don't expect a very cosmopolitan town but it has its charm and really does have almost everything you need. If you can't find it here, chances are you can in Charlottesville or Roanoke.

Off-Campus Housing at Washington & Lee University

A-

Pretty Easy

Lots of nice options with off-campus housing as a senior/junior. Typically you live in houses passed down by your fraternity or sorority with 4-5 other people. Frat off-campus houses tend to be disgusting, as they host lots of parties and hardly ever get totally clean. Sorority houses are much neater, but I guess that's to be expected.

Transportation at Washington & Lee University

A-

Traveller

Traveller is the free sober-ride system that runs Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm-2am to get students to and from parties. Sometimes you have to fight to get on Traveller, and when they say they aren't coming back past 2am they mean it. During Pledgeship, sober pledges tend to drive students to and from parties as well. It is pretty necessary to have a car as a junior or senior, desirable as a sophomore and probably not needed as a freshman (although there are definitely times where you'll wish you had one).
