It's a Thing
There is plenty of off campus housing. The trick is finding good places. Some of the landlords of very unresponsive while others are far better. There's quite a bit of housing close to campus but then again there are many students so some have to live a 30 minute walk away. However the bus system in Westwood is wonderful so it's manageable.

Don't Have a Car
Parking is expensive and difficult if you don't have a garage to park in under your apartment. If you're living in on-campus housing, don't even bother. Having visitors is a nightmare, especially for overnight parking. The side-streets are crowded and have strictly enforced parking hours. You can get around without a car and that's my recommendation.
