Small classes, great variety (especially with the other colleges in the Claremont Consortium), and excellent professors. Pomona should be more well-known as one of the best schools in the country.

Pomona College Local Atmosphere was reviewed by myneckmyback

Claremont does not offer exciting nightlife options, but it is a cute town with good restaurants and shops. It is very safe and has an upscale feel to it, which may bore many college students; we make our own fun. Getting to LA can be difficult on public transportation, but renting a Zipcar or knowing someone with a car can overcome this if you need to spend time in a big city.

Pomona College Campus Strictness was reviewed by myneckmyback

The school is very realistic about what students may do during their free time, and they are not out to get us in trouble. The administration wants us to be safe but still enjoy our college years.

Pomona College Drug Safety was reviewed by myneckmyback

In general, students love to drink socially. Given that it is in California, many people smoke weed too. Nevertheless, no one has to do anything they don't want to do.

There are a lot of singles available, even for freshmen. Dorms aren't crowded; they don't try to squeeze too many people on one floor, so you become close to everyone who lives near you and still have your own space.

Virtually all students live on-campus for all four years.

macalester or wesleyan?

What part of the country are you coming from? My sense back when I attended (a long time ago — I am shopping for colleges for my son now) is that the east coasters had a bit of culture shock coming to Minnesota. But the east coast contingent was large enough that they could band together… until they figure out how awesome the twin cities really are. Having lived near Wesleyan as well, I can say that it’s in kind of a boring sort of would-be-rural-except-it’s-densely-populated area that is sort of common in Connecticut. If city life is your thing, Macalester gets the nod.

Hopefully you were able to visit both. The cultures are very different, and you will likely prefer one to the other. Wesleyan is ranked higher than we are, but Macalester is prestigious enough that if you do well you'll be just as likely to get into grad school or get a good job. I'd also try and figure out which school has better options in the academic fields that interest you. Good luck choosing, you have good options

heads up to everyone who hasn't submitted their application yet: stanford requires you to submit the supplement before the common app and either the common app or the supplement before you can make payment. since payment can take a day or 2 to process, submit your supplement and common app now!

Yeah, it is a super good idea to give a couple days' space in case of payment problems.
