Choose What Fits Then Explore

Luther College strongly encourages it's students to live on campus, and with good reason because everything is so much closer and student life is the heart of the college's fun. Because so much happens on campus, living in the dorms is the only way one can truly enjoy the daily happenings that occur in Luther College. With freshmen dorms one can pick and choose as they please

Brandt: First Year Dorm

The dorm I lived in and the one I would say is the most spacious. The way Brandt is set up is almost as if you would want to explore. It's right next to the CFA, the Library and Jensen making it the perfect location for the Art and Music Majors and the studious.

Ylvisaker(Ylvi): First Year Dorm

This dorm is where a majority of my friends lived and probably has the most comfortable atmosphere. It is a bit out of the way but not so far that one would feel isolated from the college. It is right next to Regents and Valders, making it the perfect choice for Athletes and Science majors.

Olson: First Year to Senior Year Dorm

This dorm is the only one on campus that houses all four years. That being said, it is the most removed building from campus, but still not so far that one feels isolated. Olson is where one can make friends with upperclassmen, and they are always available for answering one's questions concerning classes, advisers, majors and what-not.

Concerning freshmen dorms, one can simply pick and recieve whatever their choice was 90% of the time(though it is easier to get into Brandt if you are a girl). However, upperclassmen dorms are harder to come by, and more often than not one's sophomore year will be spent in the Towers.

Miller & Dieseth: Sophomore-Senior Year Dorm

Behind Ylvi lie the towers of Miller and Dieseth, two dorms that are subject to every myth, legend and nightmare upperclassmen can make to prepare the freshmen when they leave their cozy dorms their sophomore year. The towers, while not glamorous, are good buildings to live in because of the resources, people, and choices in rooms available. Word of warning though, the two buildings are completely different in atmosphere, with Miller being more conducive to a study environment while Dieseth foments a party/noisy attitude.

Larsen: Sophomore-Senior Year Dorm

Larsen is right in the middle of campus and has the least amount of rooms available. It is known for being the quietest building on campus, and being right above the Health Center, Student Therapy Center and Study Abroad Office. By far the most studious dorm, Larsen is the perfect choice for upperclassmen who just want to study while being as close to the college as possible.

Farwell: Sophomore-Senior Year Dorms

Right behind Main is Farwell, a dorm famous for it's student life and recreation. The dorm rooms in Farwell are all part of a cluster, with a common room in the middle, and are perfect if you know a bunch of people who don't mind living with one another. The sense of community is greatest in this dorm and would probably get even the most introverted person out of their shell.

There are many other off-campus options but the reason I don't include them is because they deprive one of the overall college experience at Luther. No matter what you choose the dorms won't be state of the art, but you won't be living in a roach-coach either. The dorms are inviting to everyone, even if you don't live in them. In essence, pick a dorm that works best for you, enjoy everything it has to offer, and explore the other dorms and have some fun; anything else is completely missing the point.
