The School of Media Arts and Studies

As a student majoring in video productions at Ohio University's School of Media Arts and Studies (a part of the Scripps College for Communication), I have been receiving some of the best education regarding how to produce, analyze, critique, and interpret films and other mediums of media. The faculty and staff fully support each of their students individually, with each student receiving an advisor related to their craft. The workload can sometimes be a handful, but in the end, it is more empowering to the student and usually fun as well as educational. There are numerous extra-curricular programs supported by the School of Media Arts and Studies to further strengthen the students’ experience with media including the WOUB radio and television station, AVW (Athens Video Works), Film Club, and various other clubs and organizations revolving around media. The School of Media Arts and Studies is not only an enriching, educational environment for its students, it is also a place to call home for all the future filmmakers, music producers, and animators on Ohio University’s campus.

Greek Life at Ohio University

A

Greeks at Ohio University

The Greek life at Ohio University is one that is certainly diverse among gender and diversity, but for the most part the story remains the same, as far as relationships among non-Greeks and Greeks. Most Greek chapters on campus are well funded and have houses not too far off campus. They are fully supported by the school, but do not necessarily dominate Ohio University's campus. The well funded, majority of Greeks at the school are associated with partying, while the smaller, less funded only throw a few parties.

Many of the Black Greeks are not well funded or supported by the school at all. African American fraternities and sororities alike receive little to no money, have no housing for the respective groups, and only have a few parties. Regardless, they give back to the community with various school supported events and programs.

As a non-Greek I find that there is a humbled respect among Greeks and non-Greeks, but many of us non-Greeks still feel an invisible hierarchy has been made to support Greeks more than non-Greeks.

Drug Safety at Ohio University

Drug Safety at Ohio University

As the nation's second biggest party school, Ohio University tends to have a notorious record of the amount of drugs and alcohol on its campus. Alcohol remains to be the number one drug of choice at school, followed by marijuana. The visibility and usage of both drugs can be seen everyday somewhere on campus, but peer pressure is not a major problem when associating with drugs. Both faculty and the city of Athens have been cracking down on the level of drug usage by strengthening both of their police units and investigations.
