Barnard Academics
There's no doubt about it. Barnard academics are one of the most interesting, stimulating and challenging out there. The professors for the most part are fair, and will give you some wiggle room if you really need it. The multitude of Columbia libraries (the B-School Uris library is the best, just saying) as well as the multiple study spaces on Barnard's campus (for example the newly built Diana Center) give students many comfortable and scenic areas in which to work. However beware of the lure of New York at night. The sound of your hall mates dressed up and running to catch the next 1-train downtown or looking outside and the bright lights that beckon you while you're writing that final research paper is torture. But you enjoy exploring the city and having adventures with your friends all the more when you finally find an open day to trek downtown.

Barnard Housing
There are 3 freshman dorms: Brooks (the oldest and with the smallest rooms with quads-3 rooms for 4 people-and small doubles), Reid (the second oldest with all doubles of normal size) and Sulzberger "Sulz" (the newest with normal size doubles and the only one with AC). Upperclassmen housing is alright. There's several locations on/near the main campus, and one on 110th and Broadway (6 blocks south) and finally one on Central Park North (20 minute walk to main campus). So depending on your schedule, who you want to live with, what kind of rooms you want, and whether there's room in a building when your turn comes to choose next year's housing you may/may not end up with the housing of your choosing. And if there's no room left at all, you get to go on the Guaranteed Housing Waitlist (they can move some seniors into seniors-only housing or those with financial aid into subsidized city housing and put waitlistees in their rooms. So you can end up with a really nice building or a really crummy one)
