University of Maryland - College Park Health & Safety had a new discussion posted by naomijen

If the only thing stopping me from transferring to the university of maryland is the safety issue, should I still apply?

I live in california so I'd be completely alone for the first few weeks but I have common sense when it comes to not walking alone at night and things like that.

i dont go to maryland, but a ton of my friends do, and everyone i know has been perfectly fine regarding their safety. maryland has typical safety like other schools, only dangerous when people are being stupid! you just have to be smart! you'll be fine

as far as I have seen, the supposed problem with safety at UMD is mostly hype. While the area surrounding the college can be dangerous at night (what college town isn't) the campus itself seems very secure. Apparently the UMD police department takes this safety very seriously and does not let anyone but students on to the campus after 11 pm. So I would definitely recommend to not consider the supposed issue of safety at UMD when applying.

Yes.

I have never personally ran into any problems but recently there have been a string of off/on campu robberies. Some of the surrounding areas are not the greatest either but remember always travel with someone.

One of my close friends who just graduated from UMD is from LA, and she did not have a problem adjusting at Maryland. Like you said, you just need to use common sense and you'll be fine.
