Off-Campus Housing at Harvard University

C-

Just Not Worth It

On campus, the dorms are organized into 12 self-sufficient communities called "Houses" that each house a few hundred sophomores through seniors (freshmen get their own dorms). Each house has a dining hall, resident tutors, a variety of academic and personal support, libraries, and exercise facilities. Thus, most students do not find it worth it to fork out the gouging apartment rents of the Harvard Square area. While housing off campus may allow for more "freedom", the Houses on campus are very lenient and thus the cost/benefit analysis comes out against off campus housing.

Health & Safety at Harvard University

A-

HUHS Is Your Friend

Every student is required to pay a nominal health fee each year. However, that covers everything from doctor's appointments when sick, mental health counseling, vaccinations, dental care, and care when you've had one too many on a Saturday night, all at an massive infirmary right on campus. While the infirmary staff can be slow and unresponsive when the place is busy, the doctors and professionals are excellent, what you would expect from a school affiliated with at least a dozen hospitals.

As for safety on campus, there are constant security patrols, most gates close at night, and very few on-campus incidents are reported (the occasional off-campus mugging is the only news item). There are some more unsavory folks occasionally hanging out by the subway stop in Harvard Square, but the area is generally well lit and there are enough people milling about at all hours to make you feel consistently safe.

Off-Campus Dining at Harvard University

A+

Cambridge Has It All

Cambridge really does have something for every palate and budget. From burritos at one of the 3 local places (Felipe's is my favorite) to upscale dining at one of the local eateries (try the restaurants at the Charles Hotel), you will never go home hungry. There are pizza deliveries until 4am and Chinese food until 3am every night.
