Inclusive and Supportive
I can't speak for any of the other language majors, but as a Japanese major, I've found the majority of classes to be intimate, quick, and easily adaptable when it comes to offered times and clashing schedules; the workload, comfortable enough to balance with a social life (unlike engineering!); the professors, nothing but helpful and understanding. The Japanese language building, although on the small side, is a great resource for students - there are always up-to-date posters and fliers for on-going events, internship opportunities, and tutorial help. The major boasts two Study Abroad programs (Bing Overseas, and Kyoto Consortium), both of which are top-notch and immersive programs that can be paired with internships or extensive community involvement while abroad. Overall it's a small but very well-connected major that has an abundance of resources and opportunities!

Whatta Maze
Unfortunately, parking is all kinds of illogical on campus. It's crowded (although you will almost always be able to find a space), hard to navigate, and divided up into several different permit 'zones' depending on where your housing is - if you live on East Campus, you can really only park in East Campus. It makes it very difficult to safely shuttle between dorms when the need arises, unless you know what times you can avoid getting parking tickets($40 a pop!). The permit for your (very limited) parking area is also pretty expensive - around $300 for the year. But since Palo Alto isn't a very good college town, having access to a car is somewhat of a necessity for upperclassmen looking to get out a bit.

Head Down El Camino Real
The area around Stanford's not much for catering to student tastes (and wallets) so I avoid University Avenue, but if cheap is what you're looking for, just a ways down the main road there's a few gems if you've got the free time to bike, drive, or hitch a ride on the bus. A Boston Market with tasty sandwiches and amazing macaroni and cheese, the ever-popular In & Out Burger, and even the elusive Dairy Queen can be found within a relatively short distance. Head down the road the other way and there's a Safeway within easy biking distance, a convenience when it comes to late-night cravings.

Hard to Tell
I'm not in the scene and am mostly oblivious to it, but as far as I can tell if it's available, it's low-key. Alcohol is always popular, and the drinking scene is pretty big, but in my experience there's not much trouble with peer pressure and the RA's always have really good policies in place about drinking in-dorm (if you're going to drink, do it safely).

Kept in Check
Students here have a lot of lee-way, and authorities seem to tolerate a fair amount so long as everyone's being responsible about drinking. The real trouble comes with harder drug usage, violations of housing contracts, and of course academic dishonesty. Basically: if you act like an adult, policies will treat you like an adult. If you act like a loon, your mom is going to be brought in, and nobody wants that.
