Academics at Brown University

A

It's About the Process, Not the Result

Brown's very free about the academics. It gives students the option to take any class pass/fail. There are no general education requirements (just requirements within your major, and even then, you usually have a list of possible options that fulfill a requirement, as opposed to a single specific class). This allows students to take what they are interested in taking. Although there are a few majors, like engineering and computer science, that have a lot of in-major requirements, majors like these are few and far between. Normally, Comparative Literature students are free to take Blues, Macroeconomics, and Religious and Secular Approaches to Globalization (in the Judaic Studies Department) in a single year if they chose. Also, I feel there is definitely some grade inflation, so A's are pretty easy to come by. It's definitely about the process of learning, not the end grade.

Local Atmosphere at Brown University

It's Your Call

Providence is a pretty good-sized city. And most things are close to campus. It's just a short bus ride or a 15-minute walk to the mall (with a multiplex), great restaurants, and pretty much whatever else you want. The train station is also close, and it's only an hour or so to Boston.
