Demanding, If You Want It

If you want your profs to push you, they will. Some will regularly be demanding and require active engagement always, while some understand that most students are satisfied with a B and just want a job by the time they graduate. While most students generally in most classes are not highly motivated, the upper level classes will of course have those who truly care about learning just for the sake of learning. Academic rigor often will depend on department and course level. This is not to say that most are slackers; students DO do their homework, but getting a B+ on an exam often times is not the end of the world. The profs do not freely hand out As, and many students are satisfied with a B.

Majors at Gustavus Adolphus College

A

History and Scandinavian Studies

The History department demands alot out of its majors, but in turn the students learn to truly read and write effectively. One can study the traditional American and European histories, but also Japanese/Chinese, Latin/South America, and African histories. The profs are articulate but informal.

The Scandinavian Studies dept is renown throughout the country a schools of this size. Two of the faculty are alumni and the third is a Swede. The dept offers courses in Scandinavian film, literature, history, and of course, the Swedish language. Take a class on Strindberg, Ibsen, Bergman, or the multicultural issues that Scandinavians are experiencing today. The language courses are rigorous but fun.

Local Atmosphere at Gustavus Adolphus College

B

Small Yet Welcoming

St. Peter is a small town of about 10,000 people who generally enjoy a drink on the weekends at the local bar. There is one main street, one grocery store, one liquor store, and one gun shop, called shot GUNS plus. It's a wonderful place. Mankato isn't far, only about 10 miles to a city of about 40,000.

Off-Campus Dining at Gustavus Adolphus College

B+

Limited

There are a 3-4 places I would name to eat in town and after a semester, they get old. A chinese place, mexican place, a "classy" restaurant, and a couple bars are usually sufficient. If you want more, Mankato isn't far.
