Campus Dining at Florida Atlantic University

A-

Lots of options

As of 5/10, here are your on-campus options. Breakfast: Dunkin Donuts (in the Wimberly library) and Einsteins Bagels. Lunch: Wendy's, Quiznos, Papa Johns, Salsaritas (tex-mex), Chick'n'grill (exactly like it sounds) and a sushi place, all in the Breezeway Cafeteria. We also have a sports bar, Coyote Jack's, in the Student Union as well as the Centre Marketplace (commonly referred to as The Caf) which offers buffet0style dining all day for both residential students on a meal plan and commuters. We also have various convenience stores around campus called Outtakes which offer foods on the go like pre-made sandwiches, salads and soup. Rumor is that a Chick-fil-A is going into the new Engineering Building that opens this Fall, plus there will be an upscale panini lounge restaurant in the new independent movie theater opening up in the new Culture and Society Building. Restaurants are also planned for the retail component of our athletics center, the Innovation Village.

Off-Campus Dining at Florida Atlantic University

Plenty to eat off campus

Various restaurants around town, like 620-SUBS, show off FAU pride items and offer discounts to students. Here's a sample of restaurants within two minutes of campus: P.F. Changs (pan-Asian bistro), Moe's/Chipotle (tex-med), Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Laspadas Subs, Shane's Rib Shack, Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, Duffy's Sports Bar, Hooters Sports Bar, Toojays, Domino's Pizza, Cold Stone Ice Cream. And you're five minutes at best from Denny's, Boston Market, McDonalds, Wendy's, Subway... believe me, there's PLENTY to eat in Boca Raton. Non-chains include 620-SUBS, Boardriders, The Lodge and the Pita Bar.

Beach bums meet Abercrombie&Fitch

Tan, beautiful, laidback. That's FAU. We wear sandals and ride around on longboards. What do you expect? We're five minutes from the beach. Only downside is some fake'n'bake Jersey meatheads (guys) and "Boca bitches" (daughters of wealthy doctors/lawyers) but you can spot these people right away. Stay with the beach kids and you're good to go.

Health & Safety at Florida Atlantic University

A+

One of the safest schools in the nation

No homeless, no drug dealers, no stabbings. I can't remember a single serious incident on campus. Lock your car, of course, but you can still walk or jog around campus at midnight in complete safety.

Weather at Florida Atlantic University

It's Florida.

Beautiful tropical atmosphere. Little hot around the summer and beginning of Fall (~90F) but drops down to only ~50F during Winter. Recommend light clothes, shorts, sandals. Oh and an FAU hoodie.

Greek Life at Florida Atlantic University

B+

Go Greek!

There are a decent number of Greek organizations (15-20) including historically black organizations. That said, fraternity-wise the biggest ones are Delta Tau Delta, SigEp, PIKE and ATO. Sorority-wise, it's all Delta Phi Epsilon and Alpha Xi Delta. There is a plan to not only expand the number of Greek organizations to 30 by 2014 but also provide 6-8 houses by that time as well - there is already a committee working on it right now under the direction of Student Affairs. Right now most of the Greek events are pool parties and grill-outs, with the highlight of the year being Greek Week... something taken VERY seriously by FAU Greeks! P.S. A "Go Greek" store is opening in Fall 2010 to service FAU's ever-expanding Greek population.

GO OWLS!

FAU has had a football team since 2001. Since then, they've won a conference championship and been the youngest team to ever compete in a post-season bowl game (not to mention win it). In fact, they won two bowl games back-to-back under the direction of UM legend Howard Schnellenberger. Fall 2011 marks the opening of the new 30k seat on-campus football stadium. Biggest games of the year are home games against FIU (called The Shula Bowl), Middle Tennessee State (MTSU) and the Troy Trojans, who we always seem to have to face to compete for the championship title.

FAU basketball is guided by Mike Jarvis, another college hero for his championship work up north. Under Jarvis, the team has become incredibly competitive in a short time using stars like Greg Gantt (one of the top freshman 3-point shooters), Brett Royster (one of the top shot-blockers) and Ray Taylor (one of the nation leaders in assists). Student support has increased remarkably. Biggest game of the year is always BURY THE BURROW IN RED, a rivalry game against FIU from Miami. We almost always win.

FAU baseball has made many Region appearances and one Super Regional. They've knocked off Miami when they were #1 and Florida in Gainesville. We have a very good team and are expanding our facilities in the Summer of 2010. Big game of the year is against Miami at home, which draws over 2000 people.

Campus Housing at Florida Atlantic University

B+

Typical dorms

FAU has six dorms as of 2010 and almost all of them were built in the last 10 years (Algonquin is the exception). Heritage Park Towers is freshmen-only and boasts a convenience store; it shares the same architecture with Glades Park Towers, which is mostly freshmen as well and houses the Living Learning Community programs. These are generally four singles or two doubles, one bathroom, no living room, no kitchen. In that same quad are Indian River Towers (doubles with living rooms and a community tanning deck) and Algonquin ("C-block") which is all singles. The University Village apartments and the upcoming Innovation Village apartments are for upperclassmen, grad students and medical students. They have kitchens, living rooms and individual rooms. None of the FAU housing units have balconies or porches. Pets are not allowed except for fish. The Housing Quad has a volleyball pit and a barbecue pavillion and plenty of green space for ultimate frisbee, soccer and flag football.

Academics at Florida Atlantic University

B

I still quote some of my professors

FAU is home to the nation's first ocean engineering program, primarily based at our SeaTech campus. We also have a medical school (M.D.) that runs a community/continuity care-based program and a nursing program affiliated with local hospitals. We have a well-respected accounting program continually rated in the Top 10 based on first time CPA passage rates. Education is a popular major here because we run an A-rated school (Henderson) and several other education labs, and this has yielded us several Teacher of the Year awards for graduates. We offer opportunities for student newspaper/radio/television and a student-run music Lab (Hoot/Wisdom Recordings) to accommodate students in the Commercial Music Business track. Biology majors typically do marine biology (dolphin, sea turtles or algae research) or go the biotechnology route and benefit from a partnership with biotech giants Scripps and Max Planck. However, I would not go here if you are a chemistry, anthropology or linguistics major, as none of these departments are particularly strong. Also, some of the classes are a little easy because they've scaled down some expectations in the harder classes. Don't let that stop you, however. FAU has graduated neurosurgeons, astronauts and university Presidents, among other things. You will get a great education here if you give your best effort and get involved in your professor's research.
