Facilities at Occidental College

B+

Small, but Many Facilities

The campus is absolutely beautiful. The buildings are quintessential Southern California College style, so much so that movies and television shows are frequently filmed at Oxy. The library, Johnson Student Center, and the gym are all adequate, but their size reflects the size of the Oxy community...which is small, very small. But machines are always available in the gym and they're updated every 3-5 years or so. It's never completely taken over by athletes and there are big flat screens to make your workouts a little more bearable. If the library doesn't have the book you need for a paper, chances are they will be able to get it for you. Like I said, many of the facilities are small here at Oxy but there is no reason for them to be any bigger.

Greek Life at Occidental College

B+

It's Here If You Want It

The Greeks are pretty active on campus, throwing many of the big events (Toga is probably one of the most well-attended dances at Oxy) but you can still enjoy the social scene without rushing. For the most part, there is very little animosity between Greeks and non-Greeks except the occasional "I don't think you should have to pay to have friends" quip. Overall, no one really cares if you are in a frat or sorority or not.

Inside Scoop at Occidental College

A

If You Want Small and Urban, Oxy's Perfect

Most of Oxy's biggest advantages and greatest detriments come from the fact that it is small and in L.A. The size allows access to professors that is unmatched in any bigger school and because Oxy is solely undergraduates, it is the undergrads that do the research. The academics here are challenging but if you feel yourself falling behind your professors are there to help you. In the same way, one of my favorite parts about Oxy is the intense feeling of community. Maybe it's the sunny Californian weather, but even with exams and papers and grants to do people here are happy. Granted, I'm a fairly outgoing person, but everywhere I go on campus I find someone I know. Still, the smallness has its drawbacks as you constantly run into your various hookups from the weekends past in the Marketplace or the library. Additionally, there are parties here every weekend if you want them, but we definitely don't have the social scene of say...USC. But people don't come to Oxy for the parties. The location is great...if you have a car. Eagle Rock itself is sort of lacking in things to do,but it has AMAZING food. But pretty much everything else requires a drive. But within an hour or so you can find yourself at the beach, in the mountains, or at Disneyland and Oxy professors take advantage of this.
