Local Atmosphere at Centre College

A

Country Charm

If you like the outdoors, come to Centre! City folks won't get much (although Lexington's only 45 minutes away), but Danville and the surrounding area has GREAT cycling and running spots. Plus, there are a lot of historic places and some great hiking at Shaker Village.

Computers at Centre College

A+

Great Selection, Updated

The library has many computers, including Macs. I've been to many university and college libraries, and Centre has by far the biggest and newest selection I've seen. The laptops, available for four-hour checkout, are replaced every few years, and the desktop computers (there are over 40 available) are updated constantly. All computers have Windows 7 as of Summer 2010.

Facilities at Centre College

A-

New!

The campus is BEAUTIFUL, with tons of trees and old buildings. Plus, the buildings are old in an early 1900's way, not in the disgusting retro way of most colleges and universities. The gym is used by all in the college, including the athletes, so it's very nice and better than most others I have seen. The library is wonderful, the student center is new, and there are a few new living places as well.

Greek Life at Centre College

A

50/50

About 50% of people at Centre go Greek. However, if one doesn't join, there's no big deal about it. All of the parties are open, along with most of the other events, so really the only purpose of joining is for friendship, networking, and the formal events.

Campus Dining at Centre College

D

The Only Bad Thing About Centre.

While I love Centre through and through, I hated the food. It's provided by Sodexho, and their service to Centre is faulty at best. Repetitive and tasteless (unless you love salt). Further, campus dining does not heed student and faculty requests. A considerably strong movement has been underway for a few years now to get local and organic food, but little change has been made. Get the smallest meal plan possible (the one with the most flex dollars), and buy groceries instead. You'll save your appetite and your health.

Academics at Centre College

A+

Hard, but Great!

The academics here are quite strenuous (a GPA of 3.2 or so is average), so most freshman have a rude awakening when their efforts do not produce the same results as they did in high school. However, the professors are the most dedicated and brilliant group of people that I have ever met. Getting tenured at Centre is very difficult, so professors that are tenured are usually amazing teachers as well as great scholars in their fields. Further, class sizes never exceed 30 and upper-level classes usually don't exceed 15, so students get really close to their profs. In fact, many of them are my Facebook friends!
