We're More of an Academic School...Except Not.
I wouldn't say that sports are a big deal at Whitman, I think our Debate Team is the only team still in existence that's received national recognition. That said, I'd say most people here are pretty active. Almost every Wednesday there's a pick up game at soccer and most people have been on an ultimate frisbee team at some point. Forming touch football teams is particularly popular in the fall and the theater department has it's own (highly eclectic) softball team. Facilities (Sherwood athletic center) are brand new as of last year and include a sauna for varsity and club sport members. I'm only involved in fencing, but I find myself well supported by the school (perhaps because I wave around a pointy metal thing).

Responsibility Is Rewarded
Like most colleges, freshman at Whitman receive a drug and alcohol talk during orientation. In the presentation (and in policy), drug use is strongly discouraged but for alcohol use, the school chooses to promote responsibility, rather than fight the uphill battle for complete abstinence. As a result more students go for help if they or a friend is in trouble due to alcohol use. I can also quote several people in one floor of the "party dorm" who still used the sheets we were given (they had charts outlining blood alcohol level and resulting symptoms) in the presentation months previous to provide a safe limit for themselves. Local police allow Whitman to deal with students as they see fit but will put a damper on any party gone out of hand or student that's flaunting underage drinking (ex. displaying beer bottles in their dorm window.

Still Loving It
Though the big price tag and difficult academics can get you down, the Whitman Community is really a joy to be a part of. We all complain about the food and registration, but when I and my friends consider how little time left we have here, we get really sad.
