Local Atmosphere at Princeton University

TON to Do...If You're Willing to Make the Trek

What I love about Princeton is that it is a very small town, but has access to New York and Philadelphia, both an hour away. The town itself is very safe, but there are very little activities to do, even heading to a Target or a grocery store requires a car. Furthermore, the local residents, called "townies," do not have the best of relationships with the students.

Diversity at Princeton University

A+

Tons of Different Backgrounds

Yes there is a lot of representation from upper class white kids and studious asians, stereotypical to an ivy league school. But every day I am amazed by the interesting people I have met on campus; I've met a computer-programming musician from the Middle East, an athlete drafted by a professional team who decided to complete an electrical engineering degree before he turns pro, and a small-town farmer who happens to speak three languages. This mixture of people from so many unique backgrounds is a huge reason why I love this school so much.

Overall Experience at Princeton University

A+

I Love Princeton

Before arriving on campus, alumni from my neighborhood would gush over this school, returning nearly every year to reunions and proudly displaying their Princeton license plate frames and window stickers.

Now that I've been here for a year, I get it. I have found amazing friends here, and have been able to pursue what I love, both academically and in my extracurricular activities. Honestly, all of my complaints about this school could be summed up in two words: grade deflation. But you can't let it consume you, and huge key to enjoying it here is finding the perfect balance between socializing and studying; it is very easy to be consumed by either. I know not everyone loves it here, to each their own, but I feel like Princeton was definitely the school for me.

Majors at Princeton University

A

For the Most Part, Tons of Flexibility and Options

As an engineer, my process with dealing with majors is quite different from the majority of the students here. Even though I am a sophomore, I have already declared my major, and since I knew what I wanted to do before arriving, it was not a problem for me. But if you want to be an engineer, or are even considering an engineering major, make sure you are in the BSE program, or at least taking the prerequisites the very first semester. It is not difficult to switch out of engineering; nearly impossible to switch into it.

Campus Dining at Princeton University

B

Pretty Good for Dorm Food

I wouldn't say that the food is fantastic, but there are definitely a ton of options as far as dining goes. Aside from eating clubs, there are four different residential dining halls, and late meals at Frist student center (opportunities to get a meal after lunch and dinner)--so if you feel like the food is getting old, it's probably because you aren't trying out all the different options. Also there are a ton of healthy options, but a ton of unhealthy ones as well; avoiding the freshman 15 is all about control.

Drug Safety at Princeton University

B-

Lots of Alcohol

Tons of beer and alcohol in general at eating clubs, parties, and in the dorms; and a little bit of pot. Although it is hard to miss it, there is definitely no pressure to do it, and you only really get in trouble if you get too drunk or drink outside.

Campus Strictness at Princeton University

B

Unless You Are Caught Cheating, Pretty Hard to Get in Trouble

The penalty for cheating is very very strict--even small instances of plagiarism or copying a homework problem can get you suspended for a year or even expelled. Otherwise, just be careful; lay low if you're trying to serve to minors and don't drink outside and you're good.
