Great Until You Get Bored of Henrietta
Since the dorms are ~90% freshmen, the norm at RIT is for upperclassmen to live in the myriad of on-campus apartments. University Commons is by far the best option available, but they're in incredibly high demand. Living in any of the apartment complexes is very convenient, as most are within easy walking distance or a quick shuttle ride of the campus center. However, as you get older, you'll quickly tire of the suburban blandness that is Henrietta, New York. Living in the city of Rochester proper presents the problem of a 20 minute commute to classes, but neighborhoods like Park Avenue or the South Wedge are incredibly fun and well-worth the drive, plus much cheaper than RIT housing.

What You Put in Is What You Get
RIT has a lot going for it, you've just gotta go out and find it. A lot of the stereotypes about the student population are unfortunately true, but there's so many different things happening on campus that you'd hardly notice. The key to having fun at the school is to ignore all of the complaints, start fresh, and make the RIT experience yours. The clubs on campus are incredibly active and passionate about what they do, so getting involved is a sure-fire way to jump-start your new life.
The guy-to-girl ratio is, unfortunately, a large and very present driving force in almost every aspect of RIT life. However, with the right attitude and a bit of perspective, these social problems can be overcome.

Getting in Is the Easy Part
I haven't heard of a lot of people getting denied when applying to RIT. That being said, there are a lot of dropouts during first year.
