Diversity at University of Iowa

A

Diversity

I feel our campus is very diverse and accepting of different students. Our campus has several ethnic centers, including an Afro-American Cultural center, a Latino cultural center, Asian fraterneties, and a LGBT center-just to name a few. We have several events centered around diversity-giving students the oppurtunity to be exposed to different cultures. Additionally, as far a religion, there are a number of different churches on campus and religous groups. As far as sexual orientation- a transgender fashion show made news in the Daily Iowan. I feel this school is very accepting, and someone who is a ethnic or sexual minority would have no problem fitting in here.

Academics at University of Iowa

Psychology Department

I truely appreciate the psychology program here. I feel that professors here really know what they are talking about, making me aware of news in the field I was completely ignorant of before. Iowa's ranked number 9 in clinical psych, so I'd recommend our program. There are some professors that are a bore, and others I love listening too. Its basically always that way. Theres also a number of research oppurtunities-which are necessary to go to grad school.

Greek Life at University of Iowa

A

Greek Life

I am not apart of a sorority-but often consider it. Pros are you meet a lot of people, become aware of more parties, and become close with a tight nit group of people. However, its not necessary to go greek to meet people. Also, according to my greek friends-they have a lot of fees and meetings to attend that they rather not deal with. I also hear a lot of negative talk about sorority girls here-basically the slutty stereotype. But greek isnt a status thing here, its def not a big deal whether your in one or not because theres plenty of other parties and events to take part in.

Psychology

The psych program is great- I transfered here so I am able to compare with another school. The entire experience is eye-opening. However, you need to be realistic about your career options. Grad school is not like undergrad-its basically a commitment to being a workaholic for the next 7 years POST grad. If you plan to attend-better make sure you keep your GPA above a 3.5. Also, there are numerious research oppurtinies on campus for psych. Do not expect to get paid for your time and commitment, but do take advantage of this time to make references and gain experience, without this-youll be doomed. This is how is is everywhere. Psych is a popular major, unfortunately most people arn't aware of the realities of it. Be prepared to take Biological Psych and other science based courses-theyre difficult for most in this area- usually science is a weak spot in psych majors who do not realize its becoming more increasing SCIENCE BASED. Basically, do your research, be honest with yourself, and be prepared to work hard.

Computers at University of Iowa

A-

Computers

There's a lot of computer accessability on campus. There are a number of IT labs in the library-so you never have a problem accessing one. Alot of other buildings have them available as well. Having your own printer is nice-but not neccessary. Also, wireless is available everywhere.

Weather at University of Iowa

C+

Midwest Blues

Unfortunately, this is the midwest... so we have four seasons. It's a tad annoying walking from building to building in winter, but the bus system is great, so you won't necessarily freeze to death. Lasy year it snowed to much class was cancelled for two days and pizza places wouldnt even deliver it was so bad! Also, the Iowa river floods frequently, it destroyed the old art building, and the first floor of Mayflower, a popular dorm building. Also, a few years back, a tornado destroyed a greek house- but its not like this happens yearly. When its nice, everyone goes out on the pentecrest-a big grassy area that surrounds the 5 main buildings on campus. Its a popular place to lay out, nap, study, play some frisbee, or just hang out.

Facilities at University of Iowa

B+

Rec Center and Library

We JUST got a new rec center. It has beautiful facilities including a rock climbing wall, hot tub, lazy river, pool, top of the line equipment, indoor track, and much more. I love the little cubbies outside the fitness area-you can put your bookbag and what not in there so you can go in between classes. theres also a cafe that offers healthy snacks and protein shakes and smoothies.

The main library is mediocre... the book selection is great- its just not anything pretty or high tech to look at. Theres a little cafe in there to where you can get coffee, sushi, snacks, sandwhiches-which is nice when your studying late. Also... FREE COFFEE DURING FINALS!

Transportation at University of Iowa

A-

Transportation

The bus-or "Cambus" runs frequently and is free to the public. Theres several routes and stops so its not a problem. Also if you live at the Lodge, a popular off campus apartment complex, they have there own bus that runs until two in the morning (so you can go downtown!). If you live on campus or close-you can pretty walk everywhere or bus. If you wanna go other places around town its nice to have a car... but not necessary. Parking is expensive and a pain-I didn't bring my car up. Also there is nightride- a bus ran by the police station for women that will pick you up from anywhere-no questions asked. This is nice, especially for emergencies. Theres alot of city buses too that run frequently.

Campus Dining at University of Iowa

B

Dining Halls and Restaurants

The Dining Halls here are OK. Theres a lot of variety-but you get sick of the food FAST. The sandwiches are decent as well as breakfast items. Ive never ordered a grilled cheese that WASNT hard and disgusting. So DONT get a big meal plan... you wont use it after a while. Its all you can eat-but most of it i didnt find worth eating.

Theres tons of great restaurants downtown- Id recommend Mesa Pizza, Short's, The Mill, and you have to order Gumby's pizza and pokey stixs.

Nightlife at University of Iowa

A-

Nightlife

If your not familiar with Iowa City, you should know that you USED to be able to get into bards at 19. Since the 21 ordinance, things have changed a lot. At Airliner you can get in at 19 still, Summit at 20. If your 21- its awesome If you stay at other bards past 10pm and your underage-be prepared for $700 ticket. Some people risk it though. Don't let that stop you though. Other than those two bars- a dance clubs are going to open soon- most people pregame and go. Theres ALWAYS tons of parties going on, so theres stuff to do. Im not gonna lie-tons of people have fake ID's. House parties are always good though- clubs and bars get expensive- a lot of mistake freshman make is blowing all their loan money at the bars. youll be surprise how much youll spend in one weekend.

Drug Safety at University of Iowa

A

Drinking

I don't really think the drug scene here is that big, maybe weed? Drinking is HUGE, but I personally don't know a lot of people into drugs. You can't have alcohol in your dorm- if you get caught youre charged based on the amount- my friend got a $700 fine. So be CAREFUL. Also, when tailgating-don't get caught with open containers. Also if you get caught by a resident advisor its a pain-they report you to the university and you just have to deal with tons of stuff. A LOT of people here drink- so dont be surprised if thats what the people here want to do.

Local Atmosphere at University of Iowa

A+

Campus Activities

This is definetely a college town. Downtown (where campus is) theres a number of bars and clubs, and the music scene is great-tons of bans come through a lot. Football here is HUGE. Everyone tailgates. Theres a lot of cool thrift store downtown too. If you want to go to a mall, you need to drive to Coralville- its just 10 minutes away. Its a decent mall with all the usual stores. Also theres a lot of art festivals and what now. Movies are offered at the Iowa Memorial Union for 2$ a person, and free comedy shows come through too (for example, the woman who played Stiflers mom in American Pie did a show here). Basically, theres always stuff to do. Its a laid back atmosphere around campus.

Inside Scoop at University of Iowa

A

Campus: Feel at Home

Iowa is a Big 10 School-but were the smallest of the Big 10. I appreciate that- its not hard to get around-for the most part-your classes are in the same 4 block radius. It will seem HUGE at first- but is you take out the medical and law campus, its really not that big. Its easy to meet a variety of people without being overwhelmed.
