Campus Dining at University of Rochester

B-

Not Terrible, but Limited and Over-Priced

The food available on campus isn't necessarily bad, per se, but the lack of variety gets old in a hurry. Especially if you're on any kind of restricted diet (vegetarian/vegan, gluten, kosher) you run out of options really fast.

In general Douglass Dining Hall is the classiest, with a pasta station, Mexican station, vegan station, and Kosher deli. They've also added a new salad bar and a wrap station, which was really nice. Major renovations are taking place this year, adding a Chinese food option to the Pit. In general, avoid the pit unless you want greasy pizza or burgers, or really poorly put together Blimpie's sandwiches. Danforth is what you'd expect of any cafeteria. A reasonable amount of choices, but generally mass produced and less than delicious. However, nothing beats a hungover Danforth brunch--all you can eat omlettes, waffles, pancakes, tater tots...mmmmm.

The price of the meal plan is exorbitant, and if you end up with unwanted food at the end, you just lose that money--it doesn't roll over. Try to get as much declining (flexible, dollar by dollar spending) as you can, and as few clubs (generally entree, beverage, and side). Anything you could club, you can decline, but you can't club all the things you might want to decline. Declining can also be used at the Corner Store, a ridiculously overpriced convenience store on campus ($7 for a box of cereal, what?).

Nightlife at University of Rochester

B+

Start With the Frat Quad Then Work Your Way Off Campus

Nightlife on campus is dominated by frat parties, especially as a freshman. As you get to know more people, you'll go to more parties in suites or off campus, but expect to spend a fair amount of your time in frat houses freshman year if you want to drink and dance and flirt on a weekend night. It's fun enough for a year--no problem getting in anywhere, regardless of Greek affiliation or age, never any cover or prices for drinks, and there's usually a mix of loud music in dark basements and more relaxed chilling upstairs.

However, going to the same five or six places does get old, and you'll need to develop your social circle if you want to have variety. House parties are pretty fun, and there are busses going downtown running until around 2am on the weekends if you're into the club scene. Certain clubs are harder than others on fake IDs--ask your upperclassmen friends first before trying yours out.

Overall Experience at University of Rochester

A-

Come for the Academics and Make Your Own Fun!

The U of R's strength really is its academics. If you come here hoping for a state-school like party experience, you'll be disappointed, but if you're hoping for a solid education, real work internship/research/work experience, you couldn't ask for a better school. There definitely is plenty to do, but no one's surprised if you have to stay in to study.

Local Atmosphere at University of Rochester

C

Second Wind

The city of Rochester can be kinda sketchy. A lot of it is kind of dying, due to the lack of success of main industries like Kodak. The U of R is the biggest employer in the city, and it shows. However, it is making a comeback. There are a fair number of bars and clubs that are pretty fun, a decent variety of good restaurants, and the U of R red line makes it easy to get around. That being said, avoid walking around the city late at night by yourself, try to avoid the 19th ward (across the river from campus) until you know what you're doing, if you want to shop, just peace out to the suburbs (East View Mall), and keep your windows rolled up at stop lights...

Campus Strictness at University of Rochester

A

Go Have a Beer With Security, but Watch Out for Ras

Security in general is fine. If you're at a party in a frat on campus, security will probably roll through, and it's not even a problem. Just set down your drink if you're underage and be chill until they leave. If you're off campus, the cops usually don't show up unless you're at a large frat party (probably Chi Phi). More of a problem, but still, just set your drink down, don't freak out, and just be cool until they're gone. I had security show up to a party in my suite, opened the door with a beer in my hand, and just got a noise violation.

RAs, on the other hand, are hit and miss. Most of them really don't want to write you up, but watch out for the power-trippers. I got written up for just being in the room with a half-finished beer, and had to go meet with the Res Life discipline man. Be careful if you're drinking in your room, especially if you don't know your RA well or don't know who's on duty that night. Keep the door closed and the volume down, and don't leave people standing in the hall.
