Health & Safety at University of Chicago

B-

Rose Among the Thorns

The University is surrounded by some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago; however, Hyde Park, where the University is actually located, is one of the safer parts of the city. This is in large part due to the UCPD (University of Chicago Police Department) which does an excellent job of patrolling all areas that students regularly visit. The UCPD is in fact the largest private police force in the country and is composed mostly of veteran officers recruited from the Chicago Police Department. There are certainly incidents from time to time (mostly in the warmer months), but if you act reasonably and cautiously UChicago is no more dangerous than any other urban area.

Off-Campus Housing at University of Chicago

Flexible Apartment Environment

AAA

Apartments in Hyde Park typically come in two types: huge and spacious but run-down or clean, modern, and trendy but small studio style. It is really a matter of personal preference. The huge apartments make for excellent social/party spaces, if you are into that, and the modern apartments offer a cleaner more sophisticated life for those seeking that. Pricing is about in line with what one would expect from an urban area, but luckily Chicago is significantly cheaper than cramped cities like New York or LA. Apartment arrangements are also incredibly flexible due to the sheer volume of students constantly moving in and out. If you only want to stay for a month or so, or if you need to find roommates to split the tab, that will not be a problem at all. Virtually everywhere is connected by University Transportation, or you can walk if you don't mind the Winter.

Weather at University of Chicago

Chicago Winter: the Legends Are True

It's Chicago. You can't expect weather like Miami or LA. Frankly, the Winters are brutal. The temperatures are on par with most of the rest of the mid-west, but the University is very close to Lake Michigan and the wind really makes the difference. It is very important to cover your face and hands when it gets particularly fierce. Your exposure to the weather can vary significantly depending on where you live and how long your walk to campus is. (Snell-Hitchcock and Max P are just a few steps, I live off-campus and it is nearly a mile if I don't use University Transportation [which is a life saver]). Despite this, Autumn in Chicago is amazing and the campus is absolutely breathtaking every day of the year, plus we actually have a beach (yes, you read that correctly) and a number of great parks and green spaces for the warmer months.
