Off-Campus Housing at Rice University

B

Off Campus Housing

Most students prefer living on campus, even if they live in Houston. Parking can be a hassle. It's simply convenient to live on campus. Also, since it's next to the TMC, nearby apartments/houses aren't cheap since medical students also look for housing in the area.

Amazing

The engineering and chemistry departments are simply amazing. Biology/medical connection with the TMC also provide a plethora of professors to talk to and do research with. Classes aren't easy, and there is plenty of work to do, but it's all very rewarding.

Within Rice's borders, there are no real concerns. the Rice Police Department also provides escorts if one ever feels threatened. Just make sure to lock the college doors during Beer Bike Pranks.

Campus Housing at Rice University

A

Most of the Dorms Are Nice

The newest dorms on campus are the nicest. And they are distributed differently in different residential colleges. At Baker, freshmen have equal chances as upperclassmen at getting great rooms. And Baker is at the heart of the campus.

Facilities at Rice University

A

Pretty Cool

The Library is open 24 hours on weekdays, and long hours on Saturday and Sunday. The Rec Center is pretty new and has state of the art facilities. The RMC also has plenty of spots to hangout at, though they are most popular with graduate students. Each residential college has its own unique commons, which are open to students from other colleges. They often have TV/game rooms and are immensely popular.

Weather at Rice University

A

This Is Texas!

Weather is warm in the summer, cool in the fall, winter, and spring. We rarely get snow, but even the threat of snow can cancel classes. The weather is great great during the school year, but always carry an umbrella in your bag, just in case.

Scholarships at Rice University

A

Pretty Decent

Rice is very helpful in regard to student aid. Just do the CSS Profile and FAFSA. Under $80,000 is pretty much a free ride. After that expenses rise. Financial aid department is very approachable regarding concerns.

Athletics at Rice University

A

Intramural Trumps Varsity

With the exception of Baseball, Rice students aren't very enthusiastic about varsity sports. But the University does provide free tickets to sporting events all over Houston. Intramural sports between residential colleges are immensely popular.

Campus Strictness at Rice University

A

They Trust You

RUPD is rather lenient. Rice is a wet campus, and many students drink. Residential colleges are tasked with enforcing most of the rules. RUPD isn't looking to bust you, but they will enforce the rule if underage students drink in public.

Parking at Rice University

B+

Some Dorms Have It Easier.

You don't really need a car on campus. The shuttles are free and most buildings are within walking distance. For off campus housing students, parking can be a hassle. Some of the lots are rather far away. Many students manage to get convenient parking in lots at residential colleges, but that varies for Northern/Southern colleges.

Transportation at Rice University

A+

Houston TMC

Rice is next to the Medical Center and the Metro Rail, so there is convenient public transportation nearby. There are free shuttles on the campus's inner loop, between Rice and the Medical center, and shopping shuttles on Saturday.
