Positive, but Not Very Visible
Greek life at Emerson focuses mostly on community service or professional development. Fraternities and sororities don't get any kind of special housing here, and their parties are forgettable. However, students in Greek organizations have a strong bond with their brothers and sisters. They're a positive presence on campus, but membership certainly isn't a necessity for social status.

It's There If You Want It
There are straight edge kids, stoners, and everyone in between at Emerson. Weed and pills are popular with the substance abusing crowd, and of course lots of kids drink. But if you're not interested, it's totally acceptable to stay sober.

It's the Northeast, What Do You Expect?
The weather at Emerson is pretty much what you would expect of a coastal Northeastern area - cold and windy in the winter, but lovely in the spring and summer. Emerson is right across from the Common, and spring is like a big celebration. The whole city comes out to lay in the sun and play with their dogs. In the winter, it's easy to just bundle up. The walk between buildings is short, since campus is less than three blocks total, and if you have to go farther away, public transportation is really convenient.

Best to Have Your Own Mac
Tech support here is really great, but they kind of look down their noses at you if you bring in a PC. Macs cost a small fortune, that's true, but they last a long time, they're basically immune to viruses, and most importantly, they can run the huge software that a lot of Emerson majors require for editing photos, sound, and video. Also, bring along an ethernet cable, because ECmobile (our wireless network) is notoriously sluggish.

What's a Car?
Get a Charlie card (Boston subway pass). There's no parking here whatsoever, but a car would be a total waste of money anyway. It's way cheaper to walk or take the T. If you need to get outside the city, the commuter rail is cheap. For going home, take Amtrak or fly out of Logan. Parking and gas costs are exorbitant in the city and you'd hardly ever need a car, anyway.

This Is a Colorful Place.
At Emerson, East and West coast collide. That means you'll make friends you never would have otherwise met, and probably pick up some of their fashion sense, too. Bonus - if you're an East Coaster like me, maybe your new Cali friends will invite you to the beach for Spring break!
