Academics at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

A-

Academics at the U

Academic life at the U is excellent. There are many opportunities for learning outside of the classroom, including research and internships. The professors are generally good, but it is hard to rate them at a school of over 25,000 undergraduates. I only had a few professors over the course of my career who I did not think were good teachers.

There are many academic resources available for students--but you have to seek them out yourself. At a large school like this, you learn to be independent and proactive about your academic success.

Health & Safety at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

B

Safety at the U

Minnesota is located in the largest city in Minnesota, so the city crime rate might be higher as compared to other college campuses. Campus itself (and the immediate surrounding neighborhoods) is pretty safe, as long as you don't take unnecessary risks. Walk in groups, and if you have to walk alone, you can call 624-WALK for an escort to your destination, up to a mile off of campus.

Financial Aid at the U

I had absolutely no problems with my financial aid. The Financial Aid office makes it easy to track your progress and tells you exactly what you need to do in order to obtain your money.

Diversity at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

A

Diversity

There is a great deal of diversity of campus. We have a lot of international students, as well as simply different racial/ethnic groups. White students are the majority, but I would say they only comprise 65-75% of the student body. We have large Chinese and Somali student populations. The faculty seem far less diverse than the students, but that has never caused problems.

We also have very active student groups relating to sexual diversity. There is a large gay population in the Twin Cities, and plenty of opportunities to socialize within that group.

Religious diversity is also prevalent. I do not know of a mosque near campus but as we have a high Muslim population there must be one somewhere. We also have large Jewish and Catholic student groups.

Guys & Girls at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

A

Minnesota Students

We are your typical, All-American Midwestern students. No, that does not mean we're "fat." Like any large school we have all types. Greek life is fairly popular here, so we have a lot of the typical "frat boys." Avoid The Library (it's a bar) if you don't want to be around that.

Nightlife at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

A-

Nightlife at the U

For those over 21, or those who are willing to try to fake it, there are three main areas of campus, each with their own bars. Dinkytown is the largest and the most popular.

For under-21 students, there are clubs downtown that you can get into certain nights of the week. There are multiple bus lines that run between campus and downtown, and if you live on the West Bank you could walk.

For both, there are always house parties, but I wouldn't recommend them unless you are 1) in the band and going to a band party or 2) willing to have frat guys grope you all night.
