Campus Strictness at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

B

Professional Systems, Help, and Freedom

Living in the dorms is a great experience for freshmen - visitors are allowed and an "advisor" of sorts is usually always available. As you get into the later years of undergrad, those same resources develop into trained professionals who are not always available but are paid for, even if you have to wait a bit. Student healthcare is mediocre but performed with a SMILE, and that says a lot. In terms of censorship, it's something relatively felt under the "reign" of Shirley Ann Jackson, but people tend to just ignore it. You can definitely tell that it's a "right wing" science school, and not a liberal arts school in Vermont - so you need to take it for what it is. :)

Transportation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

A-

As You Get Older, You'll Want a Car

Moving within the campus isn't hard as it's small, but now that there are other satellite areas, the shuttle isn't always there when you need it (like late at night), or sometimes it just doesn't come at all! Having a car is really the most convenient thing, the only problem is places to park "legally." :)

Overall Experience at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

A

It Is What You Make of It

RPI is great in the sense that there are a lot of diverse offerings - arts and culture, religion, politics, cutting-edge science, famous professors, great research labs, etc - all at your fingertips. The only obstacle is FINDING them. All in all, RPI was a great choice both for its size (medium-small), location (I lived 3 hours away, and it's near the capital Albany), campus itself (well built and maintained with some history), standard of living (a little ghetto sometimes but very inexpensive to live), and the city itself (Troy has a lot of new cultural programs that are free to students). I love it, but you have to be a self-starter to discover the greatness of RPI! :)
