Facilities at Denison University

A-

Well-Maintained Facilities All Around Campus.

The Library is amazing when you first walk in- it is one of the things that made me choose Denison. Where the books are actually kept is definitely not very nice (low ceilings, narrow spaces between shelves). However, the study and common areas are all very nice. The dining halls are nice enough but nothing exceptional. All classrooms are well-equipped and have everything you need. Buildings are generally maintained well. Some of the buildings are old but still very attractive and the newer ones blend in well.

Campus Dining at Denison University

C-

Redundant, Although You Can Usually Find Something

As somewhat of a food-snob, I would say that Denison falls below average when it comes to campus dining. They have good made to order stir-fry and usually one or two healthy, new items a day but that’s about it. Unfortunately, every student is required to have a meal plan. The smallest one is 10 meals per week. I find this works very well. Every dorm building has a kitchen with everything you need so it’s fairly easy to cook for yourself several times a week. Usually I eat cereal or oatmeal for breakfast in my room or on the way to class and go to the dining hall for lunch during the week and dinner when I can’t find anything else. It is not horrible, and they do have healthy and vegetarian options. There are two dining halls (Curtis and Huffman) and they are both in convenient locations but don’t really serve anything different. It is probably adequate for most students and you certainly won’t starve but if I could get away with not having a meal plan, I would. Denison’s food was not one of the reasons I chose the school but it is something I put up with for all other wonderful things the school has to offer.

Off-Campus Housing at Denison University

N/A

No Off-Campus Housing

I was disappointed learning that there was no off-campus housing when I came to Denison. However, the dorms are good and the sense of community that campus housing provides is priceless.

Diversity at Denison University

B-

Most People Are White Midewesterners

Denisons diversity is certainly lacking but that is not to say that it doesn't exist. As a liberal arts college, they do try to bring in a fair percentage of students from abroad. Many are from Ohio although over 50% are from out of state. While Denison's racial and ethnic diversity is lacking, the people are very diverse when it comes to personality. pretty much everyone is accepting and open to new cultures and ideas and willing to explore different lifestyles.

Guys & Girls at Denison University

B+

Better Than Average

Guys and Girls are reasonably attractive, intelligent, and down to earth. All of the guys I have met are smart and pretty cool but there's not much of a dating scene. Hookups are common which can lead to awkwardness because of the small student body.

Scholarships at Denison University

Great Merit Based Aid

I chose Denison because of the financial aid they gave me. For such a highly ranked liberal arts school, their merit based aid awards are more than generous. As someone who didn't qualify for any need-based aid, I was very pleased with my aid package. They even offered me work study and I will not have to take out loans. I was accepted to several schools which were roughly equal to Denison in size and quality and none of them gave me nearly as much merit-based aid. I probably would not have chose Denison if it weren't for the aid they gave me but in retrospect, I am glad I chose to go here for reasons that have nothing to do with financial aid!
