Off-Campus Dining at Gettysburg College

B-

Some Options

Gettysburg is not a food desert, meaning that it's more or less a walkable town. There's a grocery store, a Rite Aid, a dollar store, as well as a natural foods store all within walking distance. Some freshmen dorms have kitchen and you're more than welcome to make use of them. There are restaurants within walking distance, as well, including a couple Chinese places, a couple great Mexican places, and your regular American fare. The Lincoln Diner is a great place to hang out at any time of day (literally, any time; it's Gettysburg's only 24-hour dining establishment). There are also a few fancier restaurants nearby, but they can be a little bit expensive. However, if you're a freshman, I would choose just to eat at Servo (the campus's dining hall) because, as a freshman, you are required to have the largest meal plan, which gets you unlimited swipes per day. Servo actually has delicious food, and a lot of it is grown locally, which is great because the town is in a farming county.

Parking at Gettysburg College

B+

Meh

Freshmen aren't allowed to have a car on campus, unless you have a pressing need for one, such as being on a sports team (I believe the golf team and the hockey team need cars to be able to get to where they practice together). There is plenty of parking for upperclassmen, though, and it never seems that anyone can't find a parking space. Tickets are handed out generously, though, if DPS find a car on campus property they don't recognize (usually meaning a freshman is trying to sneak a car in). The borough of Gettysburg also hands out tickets, too, for meters that have expired, so watch out.

Inside Scoop at Gettysburg College

A-

Potential

The student body is a little bit homogeneous in what it likes to do (party) and the College has recognized this. You can find something going on everyday if you read the Daily Digest (an email sent out twice daily to every student). However, some of these activities may not appeal to everyone or cost money. You can also find things to do around town, as well. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities, such as Campus Kitchens or tutoring at the local schools, and we have a student-run organic garden (which needs a bit more support!). When it's warm, everyone likes to stay outside as long as possible, and it's always great to take a jog around campus or in the battlefield. The College also just got a brand new gym (opened in Oct 2009, I think) which is awesome. It has plenty of new exercise and weight machines, a rock wall and tower, a huge pool, and a new basketball court. Academically, Gettysburg is intent on students being students for four years. There's not many of us who stick around for a fifth year, which is great. Gettysburg also supports its study abroad program generously and, with the right amount of planning, you can go abroad at almost any time in your school career.

Health & Safety at Gettysburg College

B+

Pretty Safe

Recently, the town has apparently gotten more violent. Most, if not all, criminal behavior reported around campus has to do with the members of the town. Walking around campus at night, I feel completely safe. It's well-lit and open and you can see people from far around. There are also many of the Blue Light kiosks where you can get help. DPS is also prepared to send out an escort your way if you ever feel that you'd need one. Common sense rules when you go off campus at night: go out with a group. The town is fine during the day, but can get a little bit sketchy at night. All bathrooms have posters with important numbers you can call in case anything happens, and the hospital is literally blocks away, so if anything bad does happen, you can get help quickly. I believe the campus does have therapy available for students, but I'm not entirely sure about that. I still don't understand the town police organization because it's normal to see Gettysburg Borough Police cars, Cumberland Township police cars, and Pennsylvania State Troopers cars driving around (in addition to the campus's DPS cars). The town police are ready to bust any parties they deem too noisy, as well, so watch out there. Lately, DPS has added more members to its team (as well as tasers), which may very well be just to increase the organization's intimidation factor.

Athletics at Gettysburg College

C

Meh

Not too many sports teams get much attention from the student body. Yes, many of Gettysburg's students play sports on the College's teams, but games aren't usually attended by a lot of people. I wish there was more support for the sports programs, though. Lacrosse and football are pretty big here.

Weather at Gettysburg College

B-

Windy!

Gettysburg is in an odd little sliver of land that for some reason constantly has gusts of wind blowing in the opposite direction you're walking in. When it gets cold, it gets downright chilly. And yes, it snows here. A lot of other reviews complained about the rain in Gettysburg, but I don't find it too obnoxious. Just get a good rain jacket and a good pair of rain boots and you're good to go. Get a bunch of sweaters, too.
