HURRAH
The rec center seems very nice, despite the fact that I've used it very infrequently. The classrooms are well equipped with technology and the buildings are beautiful. The new arts center is particularly nice. The student activities office is unfortunately rather hard to work with, but somehow many people manage to create really amazing activities on campus.

Mostly Limited to Campus
Most of the nightlife is based around dorm parties. There used to be a great reliance on off campus houses and theme houses for partying, but the town has recently instated a social host ordinance where the hosts of parties in town can get in serious trouble for serving alcohol to underage students, so it has died down a little. Once you are overage, the Contented Cow is a very popular watering hole. It's a really nice little pub with some English beers and free popcorn. Skip the clubs because there are no clubs.

I'm an English Major
I really love being an English major. The short terms make the English major a little difficult, so the experience of a Carleton English education often feels very specified over a very broad spectrum, but the professors are excellent almost across the board and the curriculum is really interesting and varied. The word load is a little steep reading-wise, but no more so than any other department at Carleton. The one thing I would say is that they could do with more modern lit classes.

They Is Useful
I'm no computer expert, but from what I can tell the computers are fine. There are plenty on campus and they all work pretty much all of the time. Furthermore, as someone who has had a lot of computer troubles while in college, the support for technological issues is very good.

Yum
The East Asian cuisine in town is rather subpar, though there is a good Japanese restaurant a short car trip from campus. The most popular destinations are Hogan Brothers, a very popular sub shop with free birthday meals, and Chapati and Kurry Kebab, both Indian restaurants. There are also several very good coffee shops within walking distance. There is also a veritable smorgasbord of pizza places for your delivery, variety, and price needs.

And It Was Good.
Though living in Musser is oddly reminiscent of living in a high security women's prison, most housing at Carleton went better than expected. There is a lot of complaining about dorms like Watson and Goodhue, but I have lived in both and I can report that they are both nice! Upperclassmen housing gets better -- triples, quints, and quads, oh my! and also better locations. The holy on campus grail is a town house your senior year. Make friends with someone who will be randomly assigned a great draw number.

BONE Appetit
Campus dining is resolutely OK. Highlights include SATURDAY SUNDAES and also maybe waffles. But otherwise, one of the dining halls is noticeably better than the other -- LDC seems to be obsessed with salt in a way that rivals Lot's Wife. Overall, you will be very ok eating campus food, even if you have dietary restrictions, but you may get tired of it after a few years. Fortunately, at that point you can endeavor to go off board.

Overheard at Carleton: Sometimes Unrest
I am from a very VERY caucasian town, so I believe that diversity at Carleton is ok. However, I gather that many people do not agree, and they are probably more qualified to comment on the diversity than I am.

Beautiful, Beautiful Nerds
The brains are pretty. The people, also pretty. The hygiene, not so much of a priority. Not in a gross way, but in an I've-been-up-all-night-and-I-have-to-get-to-class-on-time-and-biking-in-heels-is-impractical kind of way.

Jocks and ALSO Nerds
I know little about varsity sports, but many seem to be happy in their participations in them. What I like best about SPORTS is that all the people can participate. We have a rollicking intramural sports culture and many of the club sports are supremely welcoming. Shout outs go to ultimate frisbee, which is let's just say a little bit kind of popular. We also have some quidditch.

Willy Nilly
Campus tends to be very, very lenient when it comes to discipline things. Parties are rarely broken up and students found with substances of which they should not be in possession often find themselves unpunished but no longer in possession of said substances. CONFISCATION. The only thing that is mildly strictful is the new town social host ordinance which punishes the provider of an underaged drinker's booze.
