Being a "Comm" Major

As a communications major at ECU, it is pleasing that practically all of my classes are taught in the same building. Joyner, the building designated for communication majors, is easy to navigate and the classes, while sometimes challenging and writing-intensive, are usually not extraordinarily difficult. I have never had a teacher within my major that was hard to get along with. The teachers and communication advisors are helpful, and often refer students to the career center and hold workshops for building your resume, landing an internship or job, and going to interviews. There is a lot of stress on finding internships as a communication major, because experience is very important in our fields. Postings in the communications building always indicate internships students can apply for and there is even a blog full of internships just for communication majors of all concentrations.

The "Party School" Reputation

I have been at ECU for two years now, and I have not once witnessed anyone use illegal drugs. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a different story. It's everywhere. Sometimes people will even sneak alcohol into football games or class if they're that desperate and irresponsible. A lot of people smoke weed but it's not as prevalent anymore, especially since smoking of any kind has been banned in the clubs downtown.

Feeling the Cut Backs

Financial Aid is an annoying process for most students having to stay on the phone for long periods of time and wait in lines trying to get some help, but the worst part of financial aid lately is how much less they are giving out. I don't get very much financial aid at all and almost never any grants, so it's a struggle for my parents trying to pay for my tuition out of pocket. The financial aid department at ECU is fairly good for sending e-mail notifications and deadline warnings and posting bills in a timely manner.
