Academics at University of Denver

Great but With a Few Flaws

I'm in Daniels College of Business and most of the classes I've had have been rewarding and will help me later in my career. With that said, some required core classes need a serious pick-me-up because everyone dislikes them or can barely stay awake.

All the professors I've had, though, have been genuinely interested in their students and are very enthusiastic about what they do. Even if I didn't like a class because of the material, I've liked the professor.

Off-Campus Dining at University of Denver

A

YUM....

There are many options ranging from the mom and pop Pete's University Grill to the new chains around campus that all cater to a student's budget in some way. DU Alumni have even started a couple of the restaurants! There's a great variety and many things are open REALLY late and deliver if you don't want to go out in the winter snow.

Transportation at University of Denver

A-

Light Rail, Buses, and Shuttles Galore...

So easy to get downtown via the on-campus lightrail station, and the buses take you everywhere else, even up to neighboring cities like Boulder and Colorado Springs. Most options are free for students (except the FREX bus to Colorado Springs) so it is really easy to get around without a car!

Health & Safety at University of Denver

A

Very Protective of Their Students, Great Resources!

I've been extremely satisfied with our health and counseling center here on campus - it runs exactly like a doctor's office and they can get you in on the same day if you're sick. They can also do all vaccinations for study abroad, yearly checkups, etc. at a very minimal cost ($10 copay if you have your own insurance, $0 if you're on DUs insurance).

Campus Safety makes DU a very safe place to be. I've never felt insecure walking around campus at night by myself and because the area is very residential, there's minimal crime.

Campus Strictness at University of Denver

B

Residence Halls Are Strict, Rest of Campus Is Lenient...

The residence halls are super strict about alcohol, drugs, and noise. Once you live off campus you deal with Denver Police if you do something wrong or stupid, but DU isn't strict about off campus living.

While walking around campus and going to class, professors are pretty lenient and informal. As long as you don't do something against the law (felony/misdemeanor material) you won't get in trouble. It is Colorado after all...

Inside Scoop at University of Denver

Winter Carnival and May Days - YAY Carnivals!

DU Traditions are really what sets it apart from other schools -

Winter Carnival is a week long celebration on campus with a polar bear 5k run, free cereal all week, and then everyone goes to Winter Park for the weekend for skiing, boarding, tubing, concerts, etc. for CHEAP!!

May Days is the best - carnival with games, tye-dye, concert (OneRepublic came last year!), afternoon of outdoor games, etc. It's basically a week of having fun in the sun!

Off-Campus Housing at University of Denver

B+

Full House

It's never a real struggle to find off-campus housing around DU. Because DU is in a residential neighborhood, most students choose to live with a group of friends in a rental house within a 10 block radius of campus. There are also some apartments, but most students who live in apartment complexes live within driving distance of campus.

Nightlife at University of Denver

A-

Party Rockers

There is a stretch of pubs and a couple bars within walking distance of campus, but once you hit senior year, they seem pretty old. If you want to go out at night, most DU students jump on the light rail and head to LoDo, which is full of restaurants, clubs, and microbreweries. LoDo bars are very strict about underage drinkers, so many underage students stay around DU, going to the local spots, movies, or house parties

Greek Life at University of Denver

C+

Greeks Love Community Service!

Greek Life at DU is mostly focused on community service and campus engagement. They put on fun activities and bar parties throughout the year to help with fundraising. Only 20% of DU students participate, so it isn't overbearing, but the sororities can get very wrapped up in their own cliques.

Local Atmosphere at University of Denver

A+

Mile High City!!

Denver is an amazing city - we have a light rail stop on campus that will take you almost anywhere you want to go, be it a Rockies game, a musical at the Performing Arts Center, or the clubs and bars in LoDo.

Majors at University of Denver

B+

Business Internships

Daniels College of Business has its own career/internship counselor and a vast majority of students have at least one internship while at DU, whether a business major or not. As a statistics major, I have had numerous internships in roles such as a data analyst, marketing analyst, and social media intern.

Computers at University of Denver

A-

Totally Connected and Wireless

DU requires all students to have their own laptop, and the entire campus is wireless (which is super nice on a hot day sitting outside!). DU also has computer labs in most academic buildings and every residence hall, in case you forgot your laptop or it's not working. If you like super-fast internet, you can also use an ethernet cord in your dorm room or in class. You get LOTS of printer money so no need for a printer. Lastly, UTS (University Technology Services) is available if you have any computer trouble and it's FREE!

Campus Dining at University of Denver

C+

Sick of Sodexo

Sodexo runs the dining on campus, and it's not horrible, but it's nothing to rave about. I got sick of the dining hall within the first quarter of DU, and because I had the smallest meal plan I was able to switch unused meals to meal dollars to use in Nagel Hall Market, The Pub, or any cafe in the academic buildings. Nagel hall market is my favorite because it is more customizable and it seems much healthier (I'd take a chicken breast and salad over grilled cheese and fries any day!)

Parking at University of Denver

B+

Convienient and Relatively Inexpensive

If you plan to drive to campus at all, it is imperative that you get a parking permit. Hourly parking is a complete rip-off and the campus police are very fast to ticket those who do not pay. Permit parking lots are very convienient and relatively cheap - ranging from about $125-$650 for the whole year. Obviously, if you want heated garage parking, it is on the higher end compared to general lot parking on the perimeter of campus. You definitely do not need a car, though, because we have a light rail stop right on campus, and numerous bus lines that stop around campus (both of which are FREE)

Diversity at University of Denver

B+

Inclusive Excellence

DU lives and breathes "Inclusive Excellence" meaning wherever a student comes from, he/she will have the opportunity to succeed and grow at DU. This is entirely true. We have an increasing number of racially diverse students on campus - if that's your measure of diversity - but it's not stressed on campus. Everyone finds their niche very easily and there is never a lack of stimulating conversation between different ideas and values between students.
