What constitutes being a well rounded student?

I keep hearing that good grades and test scores are not enough today to get into college. That college's are looking for well rounded individuals. I currently do color guard, winter and spring track. I am a member of NHS. I volunteer at a children's art school and at my local hospital. Is this enough or do I need to do more?

You sound very set. One suggestion: do something with newspaper or yearbook. Even if it is only one article, you can still say you participated. That always looks good to colleges.

Honestly, I would not recommend doing anything just to "say you participated." That is completely unfair to those who actually participated religiously in those activities for several years. You should do what you are seriously passionate about and can positively contribute to rather than something that just looks good for your college application.

Truthfully, as I'm sure you've heard many many times there is no exact science to Ivy League Admissions...especially Dartmouth's. People get in with hardly any extracurricular activities, average or even sub par test scores, or even the flipside, where students with near-perfect profiles are denied admission.

That is enough on paper. But there is more to college than that. What really matters is the interview. If you can portray yourself well there, that is a really important piece to the puzzle.

I would say that you qualify as a well rounded student. Basically what that means is that you have interests besides just school. Colleges want to see that in addition to good grades, an applicant is dedicated to a few other activities. it's a myth that you need to have 1000 activities to be a strong applicant. A college would rather see someone who participates in 3 activities they're really dedicated to than someone who participates in 15 activities they don't care about.

That sounds like plenty. If you can volunteer that much time and have stellar grades / you can write well you should be fine. Essays are really important - write them well.

Tufts is super into holistic admissions, where they look at the whole person instead of just the numbers on your application. Try to really show them that you did what you did in high school because you wanted to, not because it would look good on your CommonApp. Good luck!

My goodness that's plenty of stuff! The way I see it, "well rounded" means, "are you getting off your butt and doing things with your spare time?" For you, I would say YES, you sound like an active individual, the kind schools are looking for! But remember, schools want you to have fun in your spare time too. Don't go too crazy and burn yourself out!

It's great to have extracurricular activities and being involved, but there IS too much. Be involved but don't spread yourself too thin. Make sure to have "me" time.

Being a well rounded student means being able to balance extra-curricular activities along with your school work and academics.

That is enough to be well-rounded I would say. You just need to be a good student and involved in some school activities.

That is sufficient, they look for leadership potential as well.

What you do is plenty enough. You will get recognized for being a NHS member for sure. Just make sure to keep those grades up and make friends with teachers!

Maybe getting a part-time job would help boost your application.

Personally, I think it is great if you have a great balance between school and outside activities.

keeping up your grades, and participating in college activities such as sports and club organization, and i am a volunteer at my local hospital...mainly obeyin the teachers and following their commands...

That should be enough as long as you have a gpa over 2.2. I didn't do much in high school except volunteer at an elementary school and I still got in. In my opinion I would say you my friend, you are over qualified.

Volunteering here is very important. As for me, I do join Compeer Program which the volunteers friends with mentally ill people and get 1 credit for psych or nursing. Test scores and GPA is not that needed as long as you have GPA of 3.0 or higher.
